Oh wow, I quite forgot to update.
I *really* want to read some Dostoevsky, but he's going to have to wait for a while. Plus I must buy some of his books first :) Luckily, it's perhaps the easiest Russian thing to be on the look for even here in Norway.. Since University started, I've been very busy (I am taking 50 points after all). I'm going to write two essays on Russian history and politics, and for this I've been reading some 70 pages in my Russian history book (От Руси к России) and yesterday I found a 40 page Russian text on Mongol influences on Rus', so I'll read that one as well. So there's some reading going on! Add to that some more Одна. I've tried and tried to listen to Taras Bulba, but I just can't focus... I have continued doing some reading and as I was writing a blog post on a poem by Blok, I found a great reading of that poem. That kind of inspired me to read more poems and I chose to read by Blok. It was a bit difficult though and I added a lot of words to Anki. I'm going to ask a Russian person to help me with it later, and hopefully I will read more poems.
Here it is by the way: РУСЬ Ты и во сне необычайна. Твоей одежды не коснусь. Дремлю — и за дремотой тайна, И в тайне — ты почиешь, Русь. I've been good! Except for reading some more poems, notably Они читают стихи & some other one that I apparently didn't print so I can't remember it now, by dear old Blok, I have read some more in my Odna-book. Yesterday I read the short story В поисках гармонии, which puts me at page 53 in the book! It was really difficult to read, the author has a lovely, chopped up modern style and makes many references to things I am sure I don't really understand. The major theme of the book seems to be life in the Soviet Union and it is extremely interesting and captivating. All the stories have a feeling of sadness over them and once I start reading I kind of get stuck. That is, provided I am in the tolerant looking-up-words mood. Sometimes, I just get tired when I encounter new words and them I can't read these kinds of books. If I am on the other hand prepared to look up many things (and to do so with a smile) I really really enjoy reading this one. The themes are really simple and insignificant, but the author makes them great, and I love sad stories.
I would be very happy if someone could help me and explain what these phrases mean: - А на четыре можно? - Лишнее. Там, за Полярным кругом, вас всем обеспечат. - Не надо нас обеспечивать, мы уже будем в царствии небесом. - Отставить. Занятия пропускаете, отсюда и пробелы. В следующий раз проверю конспекты. .. "Отставить" is "as you were!", "stop it!". This is one of the most frequently used order/command in Russian army. "Занятия пропускаете, отсюда и пробелы" -- "You miss the lessons, therefore there are gaps [in yours education]". "В следующий раз проверю конспекты" -- "Next time I'll check your summaries (notebook where students must write content of lessons)".
He was the eminent Party officer and Soviet statesman (he was the 1st Secretary of Leningrad's Committee of the Party, i.e. the biggest boss in Leningrad, now St.-Peterburg). In 1934 he was killed. See here Edited by SII on 29 September 2009 at 5:23am 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

And what about the history of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (КПСС -- Коммунистическая Партия Советского Союза)? We (or they -- without full context I don't say exactly) take the history exam every year of our/their 5-year studies... At Epiphany's frosts (i.e. 15-30 January, the Ortodox Epiphany is celebrate 19 Jan, and usually this days in Russia are very cold) is the end-of-term test, and when streams begin to ring (i.e. at April-May, when snow thaws) we/they have the exam. In Russia/USSR there are two kind of exams: "full" -- at last of the school year, and "brief" -- at middle of the school year. The "full" exam is "экзамен", the "brief" one is "зачёт". The verb "сдавать" means "take an exam, pass an exam". In Soviet universities the history of КПСС was learned every year, and students had exams 2 time every year. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I read another short story from Одна, called "Змея и Чаша". I did not like it as much as I did the previous one nor did I understand it as well, but I still liked it. The ending was a bit unsatisfactory, I'm not sure if it was supposed to have some sort of effect or if the lack of effect was in fact... the effect :P I'm now at page 73. As usual though, I am getting distracted. I am planning on printing some short stories from the beginning of the 20th century when Russian authors apparently started writing about sexuality, something I read about in my Russian history book :-) Two short stories it mentioned were "In the Fog" and "The Abyss" by Andreev.
