The reader has gotten me a bit overloaded with new vocabulary, so the second half will wait until I've gone through more grammar texts.

Korean Three Month Review
It has been three months since I got serious about studying Korean. This is a review of my progress and a look forward at the next three months. When my studies began, I knew mostly survival phrases and the basic sentence structure. Since then, my Korean has improved quite a bit, although there were some let-downs as well. Accomplishments: * Good understanding of grammar structures * Solid passive vocabulary base (around 2,000 words?) * Dramatically faster reading of hangul * Learned the meanings of more than 2,000 Chinese characters and the readings of about 200 hanja * Collected the basic learning materials for my environment (dictionaries, readers, and textbooks) Let-downs: * Listening ability has not improved much * Limited exposure to Korean media * Rarely thinking in Korean * Somewhat low returns relative to time investment Below are several goals for the end of the next three month period and a list of changes to my study methods to help achieve those goals. Goals: * Understand young adult novels (i.e. Harry Potter) with minimal effort * Improve listening to a point where I can reliably transcribe sentences * Improve speaking ability to a natural level on simple topical conversations (weather, sports, food, etc.) * Switch from Korean-English to Korean-Korean dictionaries Changes: * Significantly reduce the use of textbooks and other non-native material * Build up a media library of DVDs, novels, and comics * Add a transcription step during listening * Begin regular conversation sessions with a native speaker I feel that these goals are ambitious, but they are certainly achievable with the right motivation and tactics. In line with my new goals and methods, I have changed my current goal.
Current goal: * Learn the lyrics to 20 Korean songs Progress: * Learned 소녀시대- Kissing You * Total 1 / 20 songs To learn the lyrics, I first attempted to transcribe them myself. Second I read a true transcription while listening to the song several times. After that I looked up the words I didn't know and listened/read a few more times. Then I attempted to transcribe again. I repeated this process until I felt I sufficiently understood the entire song. This song was much faster than I realized at first.
