Wow - I've recently become interested in Korean, and seriously pursuing the path of the polyglot. Your log is incredible. You have a great deal of dedication.

I'm glad you like the log. Hopefully it can be of some use to you if you decide to study Korean.

TAC 2009 Day 172

I did a 100-word day. About 50 of the words came from me just poking around the dictionary, and the others came from some articles I was reading from Chosun. The first was about two new government appointments and the second was an interview with the person who wrote some long-lasting required reading for national math education in South Korea.

TAC 2009 Day 173

I did another 100-word day. The words mostly came from an article about the new 50,000 won bill that will be released soon and another about violence and protesting in Iran. There weren't 100 words that I didn't know in those articles, but if I learn a word I tend to learn all its synonyms, and sometimes words I don't recognize in the definition as well. So one unknown word in an article could lead to 10 new cards in my SRS.

It keeps getting easier and easier to learn new words, and now 100 is not so many to learn in a day for me. Next month I'll need to stretch my goals even further.

When you say you've done a 100-word day do you mean you've entered 100 words into your SRS, you've looked up 100 new words, or what? Also - How much time do you spend with your SRS daily? Do you do a single sitting, or multiple sittings in a day? [If it's not too much work for you, would you mind sharing the way you set up your flashcards. I'm terribly curious about this for some reason.]

A 100-word day means I've found 100 words I didn't know before, entered them in the SRS, and have reviewed them at least once. I enter them when I have free time, usually after dinner, but I do reviews throughout the day.

Below is a description of how I'm currently making my cards:

I have changed my study techniques many times since I started this log. Currently i don't take sentences out of my book, I just read until I come across an unknown word. Once I find one I create a card in Anki that has the Korean definition on the front. The card will quiz me on the Hanja if it is a Sino-Korean word, and on the Hangul if it is pure Korean. (and mixed script if it is of mixed origin) The back has the readings of any Hanja and definitions of any Hanja that I hadn't seen before. Here is an example of one I did yesterday:

Quote:
Front:
[명사][하다형 타동사] (괴로움이나 노여움 따위를) 참고 견딤.
【예】~는 쓰나 그 열매는 달다.

Answer:
忍耐

Back:
인내
耐【내】견디다; 참다; 구레나룻을 깎다

I think this method, which works on recalling rather than recognition, became effective for me as I entered an advanced stage in Korean where I had a good foundation in Korean roots. It just started to feel like the natural thing for me to do. I hope this helps!

TAC 2009 Day 174

I did a 100-word day today, and I achieved my goal for the month with a week to spare. My words all came from various articles in Chosun.

TAC 2009 Day 175

I did a 100-word day today, again taking my words from Chosun.

June 100-Word Days: 11 (Goal: 10)

In July I want to vary my studying a bit more and have my listening catch up, especially since in August I am probably going to Korea where that skill would be quite useful.

I also read Keroro 15 up to page 92, going a bit slower as I read to try to recognize any words I have learned recently.
