GoldFibre, I've been following your log for awhile and am impressed with your consistency. I am also learning Korean, but haven't been doing it for quite as long as you. Nonetheless, I am really curious as to your opinion on learning Hanja. I know that you have spent a fair bit of time studying them, so, how helpful has it been? I'm really considering tackling them, but I just want to be sure it's worth the effort.

Also, on the same lines, how did you go about learning them? What's the best method?

Anyway, keep up the good work. You're inspirational. Fighting!

Hi Caleb,

I'm really not an expert on Hanja or language learning in general, but I'll try my best to answer.

My opinion:

I want to reach advanced fluency in Korean, so everything I can learn that is related to the language is of interest to me. Anyway, they are not so hard to learn, they seem like good memory aids, and they are used sometimes! If I had to start over again with Korean I would still learn Hanja.

How helpful has it been?

I can guess at least one Hanja of most of the new words I come across. I think it's a great memory aid, so it definitely has helped. The topic for debate might be if one could help themselves more by devoting the time on Hanja to something else, or when is the best time to start learning Hanja. I started pretty early.

How did I learn them?

I used Remembering the Kanji by James Heisig to learn the meaning of the first 2,000+ characters, and it took a little less than a month. As for character readings, I just take them as they come. Whenever I look up a word, I check it's Hanja as well, and maybe it sticks in my mind, and maybe it doesn't. Currently I am hunting for a copy of Cracking the Chinese Puzzles by TK Ann which goes into depth on about 6,000 characters. It's out of print, but if I get my hands on it I will try to incorporate it into my study.

What is the best method?

I really don't know. I feel like I got a broad and shallow knowledge of the characters from RTK. I would like to deepen that knowledge eventually, so I'm poking around for ways now. Hopefully the TK Ann book can fill that gap. I would recommend RTK to a beginner as a start. However, different methods work for different people. Professor Arguelles gave a detailed recommendation for learning Korean in his forum, but I did not find his methods or recommended resources very helpful when I tried to use them. I think you would be best served trying lots of things and sticking with whatever works the best for you.

I hope this helps you. Good luck!

TAC 2009 Day 30

I read 이슬이의 첫 심부름. I am still picking up about 10 words in each of these easy books. Not bad for 10-15 minutes of reading.

Definitely, thanks. Oh, one last quick question: since "Remembering the Traditional Hanza" came out, would that be a better route than RTK?

Yeah, the new traditional version would probably have more characters in common with Korean, though I haven't looked through that particular book before.

TAC 2009 Day 32

I read: 똥벼락

I got Cowboy Bebop in the mail. It is a great animation even though the Korean subtitles only loosely follow the dialogue. I also got my hands on a satellite decoder box that brings me some Korean channels. Right now I only have CGNTV and Arirang, but I should be able to get a few more once I sit down and figure out how to set it up properly. I'm watching a sermon right now.

Hey GoldFibre, forgive my ignorance, but for awhile now I've been wondering what you mean by using a "scriptorium." I made a couple feeble attempts to find some clarification on the net, but was unsuccessful. Anyway, in earlier posts it sounded like you really found it's use helpful, so that piqued my curiosity. Also, I ordered "Remembering the Traditional Hanzi" and for now am working through the free sample available for download. I must admit that after having learned a few Hanja I've already noticed them helping me break down and remember some words that I was having difficulty with.

Anyway, in closing, keep on going. I think you can reach your goal of novels by 2010. I'm planning on being right there with you.
