TAC 2009 Day 64

Sports Segment, Day 1!

I did 50 reps of 2 different sports clips, and the vocabulary wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

A ton of Doraemon and Keroro comics arrived in the mail, which might be good light reading while I'm working on the news.

I also did my 50 Anki cards for the day.

TAC 2009 Day 65

Sports Segment, Day 2!

I did 50 reps of 5 different sports clips and am picking up some of the common vocabulary. Still I'm way behind my understanding of the weather, so I take a different psychological strategy to maintain my motivation. My goal for each clip is only to improve my understanding after the first viewing, not to understand the entire thing. This keeps my focus on the next step and not the far off goal. For me, little adjustments of perspective like that have been essential to maintaining my effort on this long project.

I also did my 50 Anki cards for the day.

TAC 2009 Day 68

Sports Segment, Day 5!

I did 50 reps of 7(!) sports clips, and decided to track the total down below with my Anki cards. I'm getting much more comfortable with sports, especially baseball, which has all the big sports news this week in Korea.

I did my 50 Anki cards for the day. However, since the cards I'm using aren't in line with my current goal, so I'm going to try to find a good way get my SRS time to be news-focused. Tomorrow I may play with an audio splitting program and see if I can get good cards automatically from all the news clips I've been collecting anyway. If I can't find an efficient method, I may put the SRS on hold and do more news clips each day with the extra time.

Lastly, I implemented a ban on some of my time-wasting activities that may be distracting me when I could be learning Korean. Mostly this relates to surfing the internet in English. For instance, I have bookmarked my own thread on this forum and am not allowing myself to look at any of the other pages. Early on in my study I observed a similar ban, but eventually came out of it over time.

TAC 2009 Day 69

Sports Segment, Day 6!

I did 50 reps of 2 sports clips. One more day of sports left, and still I haven't picked the next category. I wonder which is the easiest after weather and sports.

Additional Anki cards are on hold for now, but I am keeping up with the due cards.

TAC 2009 Day 70

Sports Segment, Day 7!

I did 50 reps of 1 clip and am finished with sports for now. The next segment will be society.

I've done this 50 reps exercise for a full two weeks now and am ready to tweak it. This week I will put less focus on getting in 50 viewings of each clip, and more focus on maximizing my active listening time. I may also change how I track the clips, but I haven't decided on that part yet.

I'm changing how I want to use the news clips, so I also had to change some software as well. What I want to do with my videos is to loop segments of them so I can learn a few lines at a time. However, Windows Media Player doesn't have this option and it can't even seek in the videos from WebVideoCap.

...but you can do this with Quicktime Pro and Flip4Mac. Quicktime Pro lets you do A-B playback, and Flip4Mac will play wmv files through Quicktime. Strangely enough, I can seek the unseekable wmv files with Quicktime, but couldn't do it with Windows Media Player.

Just FYI for anyone trying to do something similar!
