TAC 2009 Day 71
Society Segment, Day 1! I went through several clips, listening to one or two sentences at a time until I understood them well. Instead of setting a goal for reps, my goal is to understand as much as possible. There is a LOT of new vocabulary in the society clips, but the words are overlapping more than I anticipated. I am holding back on any kind of tracking number for now. Today I went out to lunch at a Korean restaurant I hadn't been to before. Our waiter was a guy from Bangladesh who had self-studied Korean and English and spoke both languages very well. He also said he was in the process of learning Japanese and Arabic, though he continued to study and improve his other languages.
I was genuinely impressed with his accomplishments, and on top of that, felt like he was the first person who understood that I was learning Korean because I enjoyed learning it. Literally everyone else I have met who finds out I'm studying Korean asks me, "Why?" in a suspicious manner, and I have trouble coming up with a satisfactory answer. Anyway, it was encouraging to meet someone who has already climbed this mountain! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

TAC 2009 Day 72
Today I took a holiday from the news, so I won't count it towards my society segment week. I spent half the day with hanging out and talking with a Korean family, and the other half watching Korean-dubbed Dragonball. GoldFibre, where do you buy your movies and comics and stuff? I'm especially interested in Dragon Ball Z (dubbed cartoons and comics) and Naruto (dubbed cartoons (they have that, right?), but if you had any other recommendations I'd be glad to hear them. Also, the looping idea is really interesting, I'll have to give it a shot sometime...

I got DragonBall and a few other animations from AladdinUS, which is definitely the best store if you can navigate it. If you can't navigate in Korean yet, YesAsia has a much smaller selection displayed in English. I'm pretty sure that these box set animations are pirated, but they are really good copies and oh-so-cheap. TAC 2009 Day 73
Aside from the sports and weather, the vocabulary in the news is pretty massive, and I don't feel that breaking down by subject is the best way to approach right now. Today, instead of going through entire stories on one subject, I went through the anchor's intro bit on all of the stories. If I go through the entire story on these tougher topics I just get too overwhelmed and don't understand much. For now I think doing just the intro gives me a good balance between understanding the dialog and taking on new vocabulary. By the way, today TAC 2009 is 1/5th over - I hope all the other participants are also learning a lot! I went through the headlines of the previous day's KBS 9 News. I also received a haircut from a Korean and got to surprise her with my Korean ability.
