Hi Hollow,
It looks like there might be some misunderstanding about my situation. I already know at least 1,500 Korean words and have a solid base in the grammar, having worked through the text mentioned earlier in the thread and its predecessor. I found that beyond the first thousand words or so my vocabulary acquisition slowed down significantly. I hypothesized that associating Sino-Korean words with their respective Hanja (internally) will help me retain and distinguish the meanings. To clarify, my plan is to read Hangul and recall the meanings through Hanja. Additionally, I only post one measure of my Korean studies on this forum. Every day I also listen to Korean news podcasts, read Korean news online, listen to Korean music, read a bit of Korean novels, and chat online in Korean. I don't post these other activities on the journal, because it fear it could turn into an excuse for not progressing with my more structured studying. Studying 漢字 is very commendable and necessary, but I noticed that you didn't mention situations in which you speak Korean. This may be a reason why you've hit a 'vocabulary wall'. All those other activities are good, but there's nothing better than speaking in person with a Korean, which is, after all, why you're learning the language. If you haven't got a tutor, I recommend that you find one as you need a guide up a very steep and very high mountain. aegi, we've had this discussion before. Although studying Hanja is very commendable indeed, it is not necessary. As Hollow mentioned there's the 40% of pure Korean words left and your time "could" be better spent learning complex grammatical elements and doing the drills. At most, the only part of Hanja learning that could be considered "necessary" is the ability to recall Hanja on seeing Hangul counterparts, which I believe is what Goldfibre is already aiming for. But I agree completely with your other points. Try to get a native speaker to speak to you in person. You don't need to engage in a "structured" study as defined by a text book. You are better off learning through conversations, comics, cartoons and TV, which you seem to be already doing according to your last post. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

It would be great if I could regularly converse with a native speaker, but it really isn't feasible for me at this point. Hopefully I will be able to add this element to my learning later on. For now I'll have to settle for shadowing, which I forgot to mention in my earlier post.
