TEXT COMPREHENSION PRACTICE: TURKISH

Yesterday I studied Bölüm 3 of the workbook Türkce 1 and used two of its texts for text comprehension practice. One text was a kooking recipe in Turkish. But it isn't vegetarian, so I cannot use it for my cooking log. The other was about a Turkish woman, telling that she has lived for 15 years in Germany working in a factory, being an analphabet without any knowledge of the German language.

CORRECTED VERSION OF MY TURKISH ESSAY ABOUT DECEMER AND CHRISTMAS

Aralık
December

Aralık yılın sonuncu ayı(dır).
December last of the year month-is.

Fakat "ay" da "moon" demek.
But "ay" also "moon" means.

Planet-his Mars two small moons has: Phobos and Deimos.

This months-in of Germany cities-in very crowded, because many people Christmas-for presents buy.

Good that already last month-in for-my-friends presents I had bought.

Almanya'da Noel aile bayramı(dır).
Germany-in Christmas family celebration-is.

Ama Noel'i seviyorum, çünkü bu Noel geleneği hoşuma gidiyor.
But Christmas I like, because this Christmas tradition I like.

Because many years ago Christmas-on was snowing a song there-is: "Leise rieselt der Schnee".(*)

Fakat şehrimde aralıkta hiç kar yok. ("kar" is an uncountable noun)
But my city-in December-in snow there-is-not.

(*) This German Christmas song still exists and it is sung by many people every year.

SELF-STUDY TURKISH: WORKBOOK TÜRKÇE BÖLÜM 4, WEEK 52

This Unit deals with yor-Present-Tense (simdiki zaman) and the cases Dative, Ablative and Lokative. Nothing new for me, of course. The vocabulary is slightly different from my previous books. An text work is presented, whereas my previous books mainly focused on dialogues.

Tomorrow I will have another possibility for language study - before the Christmas pause - let's see, what I can get done on that single day.

SELF-STUDY DANISH: Unit 7 of "Einstieg Dänisch", week 52

Unit 7 deals with asking the way through the city of København.

A. There is one grammar topic: Ordinal numbers

1. = første
2. = anden
3. = tredje
4. = fjerde
5. = femte
6. = sjette
7. = syvende
8. = ottende
9. = niende
10. = tiende
11. = ellevte
12. = tolvte
13. = trettende
14. = fjortende
15. = femtende
16. = sekstende
17. = syttende
18. = attende
19. = nittende
20. = tyvende
30. = tredivte
40. = fyrrende
50. = halvtresende
60. = tresende
70. = halvfjersende
80. = firsende
90. = halvfemsende
100. = hundrede
1000. = tusinde
1000000. = millionte

B. The other grammar topic is about the usage of Danish prepostitons.

- forbi teatret = am Theater vorbei
- over krydset = über die Kreuzung
- gennem haven = durch den Garten (N.B. false friends: en have = a garden)
- over for slottet = gegenüber dem Schloss

(to give directions)

Now it's time to wish the readers of my TAC log:

in Danish: Glædelig jul!
in Turkish: Noelin(iz) kutlu olsun!

FINAL RESULTS AND END OF THE YEAR REPORT OF THE TAC 2009

1. My goal for the TAC 2009 was:

"I just want to continue my present strategy of learning. By the end of 2009 I want to have completed "Güle Güle" textbook and workbook. For the rest I don't want to put me under any specific performance pressure."

In comparison to other participants I stated a rather modest goal and as a result:

a. I worked through the whole "Güle Güle" textbook and workbook (together with my studypartner), 20 units in total.

b. I started working with the new textbook "Einstieg Türkish" and I worked through Units 1-20 of this book. I was lucky that I could finish it by December of 2009. In advance I didn't know, that I would have time starting with a new book.

2. I wrote several small Turkish essays with English hyperliteral translations and herfore received valuable corrections made by Ertugrul together with detailed grammar explanations.

3. My study method changed during the TAC 2009 year. First I was attending a VHS Turkish course and besides this I had my private study group. Then I decided that because of low teaching quality I wanted to quit the VHS-course. For many months I only worked together with my studypartner with a kind of semi-self-study method. In October I had personal reasons to stop my study group and (for the first time in my life!!!) start doing language self-study. I was surprised that I could manage this after one week of adaptation without any difficulties. Self-study is cheaper than official courses and it's more flexible, I can adapt it to my own learning abilites.

4. The fact that I finally decided to start doing self-study gave me the possibility to start studying a second language: Danish. I had very little previous knowledge of this language from a half semester VHS-course in 2003, so I had to restart this language from level zero.

5. I worked through the lessons 1-7 of my textbook "Einstieg Dänisch".

6. Language levels:

a. In Danish (re-started on 15 October 2009) I am still on the very beginner level. So far in grammar I have only learned the Present Tense forms, which still limits my possibilities to express myself. With Danish I can triangulate on my other languages German, Dutch and English, so from the very beginning on I always tried to read other people's Danish posts in this forum.

b. With learning Turkish I re-started on 1 May 2008 then also with level zero, because my previous knowledge from the 1990s was too much broken up. So a systematical study was necessary after making a pause with this language for 10 years. During this TAC 2009 I made quite a progress in my PASSIVE reading, listening and grammar knowledge of the language - whereas my active language skills of Turkish are still weak. I have nobody to speak the language with and in Turkish shops in the city the Turkish employees see from my outer appearance that I am not Turkish, so they insist on speaking German to me. Text chat would be a good training method for me, but so far I haven't found a useful place to implement this. The next TAC year will show, in how far it will be possible for me to activate the language.

7. Keeping a TAC log was a great stimulans for me to keep my study discipline. Logging is fun for me, so it's easy for me to stick to it.

8. I want to thank all readers of my TAC 2009 log for their interest in my writings and hope that I could insprire a lot of them. My special thanks to my former studypartner and those readers who gave me their feedback, help, explanations and language corrections!

9. Statistics:

Replies: 429
Views: 55.763
Popularity: 72 %

-------------------------- TAC 2009 --------------------------------

10. Outlook: In this same log I will start the TAC 2010 in the new year as an individual participant (not as a member of any team).

50. = halvtredsende ---> halvtredsindstyvende
60. = tresende ---> tresindstyvende
70. = halvfjersende ---> halvfjerdsindstyvende
80. = firsende ---> firsindstyvende
90. = halvfemsende ---> halvfemsindstyvende
100. = hundrede ---> hundredte (selten!)

... remember the etymology of these words: they are all based on the 20 number system (and "sinds" is 'times')
