Merhaba Fasulye!

Good luck to your Turkish and Danish studies! I think I might 'relaunch' my Turkish studies some when around mid-2011 (since I have a set of Assimil Turkisch), but I think you are definitely ahead of me!

Edit: et aussi bon courage avec tes etudes de francais!

ps1: there seems to be a problem with the display of accented letters on the forum..

Tesekkür ederim, Noriyuki!

SELF-STUDY DANISH

As my Danish course has still its Christmas holidays I had a Danish self-study session in the mediothek today. Within only 1,5 hours I studied the whole Unit 17 of my textbook "Einstieg Dänisch", which was a big surprise. Many words of the unit were already known to me from the Danish course which uses the other book. And I knew how to pronounce almost everything without listening to the dialogues in advance. So it was really a breeze to work through this unit. This proves that I have made some significant progress in my VHS-Danish course because before I found these units much more difficult.

WILL A JOB BLOCK THE "UNIVERSALA KONGRESO" THIS YEAR?

I have to apply for jobs on the 1st job-market and this could cost me my participation of the "Universala Kongreso" in Denmark. But I have to explain this as there seems to be a special rule for Germany. If you start a new job in Germany and sign an employment contract, a trial period (in German: Probezeit) of 6 months is standard. And during these 6 months it's not allowed to take holidays. For example in the Netherlands such a clausule is completely unknown and probably also in other European countries. So the situation might occur that I may be placed in for example a callcenter job with a standard employment contract, then I can forget about my Kongreso in Denmark. If I am allowed to continue working at the school, I won't have a problem because the Kongreso takes place in the official school holidays of my Bundesland.

Hoi Fasulye,

I did not know that the probation period in Germany lasts that long - 6 months! I do sincerely hope that you could get the job you are looking for, and that you will be able to attend the Kongreso in Denmark!

I think that this is different from other countries. All my previous job contracts had a probation period of 6 months. Today I have informed myself at a travel agency: There is no insurance, which would pay the money back, if I have to work instead of attending the Kongreso. This special risk cannot be insured in Germany.

I wonder if you are referring to holidays or vacation time. We make the distinction between the two here; I know here in the U.S. it is not unusual for a new employee to have to wait 6 months or even a year before they are allowed to take any vacation time. State and Federal holidays are different, all employees get those days off with pay. But there are not very many of those. And if you are a contract employee, you may not get any vacation benefits at all.

Maar, het is jammer als je kan niet naar de Kongresso gaan.

I think in Britain it's called holidays and in America it's called vacation time. The Kongreso lasts a week, so you need vacation time of course to go there. It may happen at any time that I will be placed in a job on the first job market, but it may as well not happen. So it's insecure, what will happen. And that makes it insecure, whether I can go to the Kongreso or not.

MEMORECORDER PRONOUNCIATION TRAINING DANISH

Today I have a big session pronouncation training Danish by using both books, "Einstieg Dänisch" and "Vi snakkes ved". A memorecorder is a very effective tool, because you can control yourself and you hear every detail. For example if I read and record one dialogue 4 times I make rapid progress in my pronouncation, because with every reading it gets better. My conclusion is that I should do this kind of training more often, at best 2-3 times a week. It was november that I did this training for the last time, so this is not enough. I like to listen to my own voice, so this is no hinderance. I am more familair with the Danish pronouciation rules now, but I sometimes am a bit sloppy with using the rules. It's not even necessary that I do so many listening exercises as I had to do in the beginning of my Danish studies. But I really need to read aloud more.
