Obviously I should have started putting my words into Anki ages ago. 275 cards. I am
surprised at how many masdars I don't know!

So I have put the recording of me reading a few sentences in Mandarin online and have
already noticed one mistake. But I really want opinions that are not mine. So I tried to
create a thread. But I don't know if it's in the right forum (I put it in two other
forums - and then deleted it, of course - before settling on General Discussion).
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Anyway, here's the clip. Any opinions welcome.

Here's the link to the thread if you want to comment. You know you want to...

I think it's a difficult thing to comment on because - as far as I know - I generally
have no major pronunciation/tone problems, with the exception of the sound qu (which I
don't think appears in this clip). But I'm hoping that some native speaker can give me
advice on intonation. I really want to get my speaking as close to native as possible. I
may even begin simulating a Beijing accent to match my textbook ;)

Went back to my old standby of choosing a word I like for the name. Because it doesn't
have "Chinese" or "Mandarin" or "Learn a language in 24 hours" in the blog name,
traffic will probably be a little quieter. I'm completely fine with that!
Now I need to work out my lesson format - or I could just not do lessons and post
whatever I want. Can't decide. I really DON'T want to put my best teaching materials
online because online materials are so easily stolen. But I DO want to put worthwhile,
interesting resources on this blog. So it's a bit of a balancing act.
Off to Anki (verb). Now that I've made my blog (though there isn't anything in it yet),
I'm going to stay off the internet for most of the day. Ever since the end of my class
- or, really, the beginning of this week - I've been spending an exorbitant amount of
time on the web, just wasting seconds, minutes, hours. Methinks it would be a good idea
to cut down.

I recently bought an Arabic reader for when I don't have a lot of time but want to read
something short anyway, as I don't like stopping too frequently in short stories and
novels and most of the pieces in the reader are only a page or two.
Anyway, in the preface, the author referenced Jacob M. Landau's 1959 A Word Count of
Modern Arabic Prose and noted that "the first one thousand words of the Landau count were
found to represent between 70 and 75 percent of all words counted by him."
Just wanted to share that.

Why is it so much easier for me to find resources for Japanese than Arabic?
As for Chinese, the lack of response on my thread asking for opinions about my accent
leads me to believe that my pronunciation is pretty good. Which I had guessed already,
but I wanted advice on intonation, which it doesn't seem like I'm going to get. Anyway,
onto phase 2.
By the way, I noticed that the clip I put up has been downloaded a full 25
times. That's about a fifth of the people who have viewed the thread, excluding
myself. Uh, I'm not sure what to say. Thanks for the interest, guys? I'll be putting up
more useful clips soon in the future, including excerpts of (or full readings of) short
stories that are NOT randomly selected, so look forward to that instead.

I've decided to post a weekly mission statement to remind me of what I want.
WEEK 11
By the end of this week, I hope to have put 1200 odd vocab words (excluding words I got
from reading and am not sure how to pronounce) into Anki. I will also have established
a twice-daily flashcard routine for language maintenance, as well as a specific time at
day for reading. The last two Arabic-related activities I hope to engage in this week
are to drastically increase my listening time - right now, I just listen for maybe half
an hour to 45 minutes before bed - and to complete the last two chapters in my
textbook. Other than that, I'm just going to keep on going.
As for Chinese, I will be slowly getting my new Chinese blog on its shaky infant feet.
I intend to begin by doing a series of posts for complete beginners before slowly
working up to a low-intermediate/high-beginner level, at which point I will post the
link to the blog in my profile and open it to the curious. After reaching that level,
anything is fair game as far as I'm concerned for recording - things I'm reading, more
complete beginner stuff, news slowed down, monologues speeded up - all tagged
appropriately. I'm just nervous that I'll eventually run out of room on box.net, where
I have room for only 1 GB of storage. That's a lot, but I can't help worrying!
