There are two important questions that we haven't fully resolved.

1.) Are the Barron's versions covered by copyright?

The answer is that some are and some aren't, or at least some have notices that say certain portions are copyrighted (to Barron's), while others have no copyright notices whatsoever. The safest route would be to avoid including the Barron's version in our digitizing project. However, several Barron's FSI courses have already been converted, so it's a shame we can't use them.

2.) Are the Audioforum releases covered by copyright?

I don't know. My guess would be that they are not, but I'd really have to get my hands on an original book and set of tapes from Audioforum to see if they contain any copyright notices. It's possible that they modified some of the courses, but left the rest in their original state. It's also possible that portions of the book are covered by copyright but the audio isn't. This question is important because there are several Audioforum courses in digital format floating around on the internet.

As for actual courses that we will be converting, the full Standard Chinese course is on the list. I have access to several FSI courses at my library for languages that most people here won't be interested in. ElComadreja mentioned that he plans to convert FSI Spanish 3 and 4.

Converting the books is a different matter altogether.

My main concern about this project is that there's too much planning and not enough doing. I realize that we have high standards, but I would be content with an unfiltered, unedited, and uncompressed FSI course with a book scanned into hundreds of jpeg files. Maybe I don't have very high standards, but I'm only concerned with using the courses and squeezing as much language proficiency as I can out of them, not in creating a work of art. I would like to have the most important courses converted into digital format in the shortest time possible so that the other forum members can start learning with them.

Those of use with scanners should be hunting down the books at libraries, while those of use who can convert cassettes to mp3 format should try to find cheap used versions on the internet or try to borrow cassettes from other members. This is just my opinion, and I don't expect everyone else here to agree with me.

Any FSI Polish or Serbocroatian? What languages exactly are you referring to?

I thought they had Serbo-croatian courses, but it turns out they only have the books. Some of the courses they do have are: Cambodian (48 cassettes), Korean (35 cassettes), Vietnamese (55 cassettes), Yoruba (36 tapes), Hungarian (?? cassettes), Turkish (27 cassettes), Amharic (31 cassettes), and many others along these lines.

I agree with you Malcom and I'd rather have the books converted quickly in a bunch of images in a pdf files (no ocr) than having to wait long.

Anyway we can allways make better versions afterwards.

I'll see if the public library has some books for FSI...

You can get the phone number of the company from this web page (my computer won't open it at the momment).

Has anyone of you guys ever phoned this person?
Anybody has bought one of their courses through that web site?
The web site hasn't been updated for 4 years?
Do they still exist and sell those courses.
I tried two e-mail addresses and the messages were returned to me. Is the guy honest and for real?

I do not think it would be safe to digitize commercial releases of FSI and this website will not offer for download anything but the programs sold by the NTIS - that means straight from Uncle Sam.

The problem is to get those programs for digitization. I have access to the Chinese DLI and we can do those, but for the rest either we need to find somebody who has them, or one of us must buy them for others to share them (legally).

If people do their own digitization of commercial releases of FSI programs, that's their problem, but I won't list them here for obvious reasons.

Malcolm, if you are ready I can send you the Chinese DLI tapes, PM me again please.
