Talk about coming late to the party, or as my dear old dad used to say "a day late and a dollar short."
1) The "ripoff" versions of FSI courses sold by Barrons, Audioforum and others ARE public domain, and therefore can be legally digitized and distributed. You just need to look out for, and delete, any little "extras" they might have put in--as far as I know they're all in the audio (trying to add to a scanned book is very difficult), and are pure cr*p. Remove them, and you're perfectly legal. 2) Platiquemos is the exception. It has been heavily edited, the text retyped for clarity and ease of use, and the audio about 70% re-recorded with new voices, increasing the number of voices from 4 to about 20. The Platiquemos text, for example, contains about 500 authentic period illustrations, with information about the relevant cultural/historical information. It is available completely digitized (and downloadable), as well as "hard copy" with a printed and bound book and regular audio CD's. The original FSI program, no matter how obtained, is difficult to use as an audio-only course (as in a car, on a walkman type player while waiting for a plane or jogging, etc.) I have added many extra "prompts" to the drills and exercises to make them useable in these circumstances. When the original was produced, you could only use it in a "language laboratory", and thus is was easy to have the book before you. I'd hate to be responsible for somebody having a wreck because they were consulting the Platiquemos book! Platiquemos is available in 5 formats, with numerous money-saving packages. I don't know if the administrator or moderator will allow this, but I'll try anyway.
