I'm definitely interested. If my information is correct, you don't need the book to use this course. I actually have module 9 (11 cassettes) and most of the books. I'd be interested in the rest of the modules, and I'm willing to convert the one that I have. Also, I mentioned in another post that I have access to most of the FSI courses (the originals, not the barron's). I could convert them to mp3, but it would be up to someone else to fine tune the audio if it's required. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

We are discussing with Pentatonic to determine a recommended format and decide some technical guidelines. As soon as this is done we'll come back to you and we can begin with Chinese. Thanks!

I would defintely have interest in the digitalized Mandarin copy... By the way, I recently obtained levels I,II, and III of Pimsleur's French as well as Mandarin, in digital format. I just finished getting Pimsleurs Russian I also.

I, too, would be very interested in FSI Mandarin (and French as well - I'm currently using "Barron's Mastering French 1").
In general, I think the idea of making the FSI-programs publicly available is excellent. But I fear that given the huge amount of effort involved it may not happen. (Maybe I'm just pessmistic - I'd be more than happy to be refuted on that!) In the past, I've digitized some of my tapes from comercial language programs (to use with an mp3-player) and found this very time-consuming (even without any audio clean-up, just recording and sectioning into individual dialoges). I wonder what we can can do to ensure that this project really gets off the ground. Some people have access to the some of the tapes (because they own them or have them in their public- or college-library) while others (like me), don't currently have access to them. I'm sure lots of us FSI-deprived language-enthusiasts would be more than happy to help with the project, but the burden of doing the digitzing and scanning would very likely be distributed very unevenly - with those having access to the tapes, suitable equipment, software and expertise doing most of the work. Any ideas for how this could be overcome? I'd hate to see the the project just quietly abandoned because we cannot solve these logistic problems. Someone already suggested getting Project Gutenberg involved in the digitizing of the written material. That seems like a good idea. What about the audio? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Zack, for your information me and Pentatonic are discussing a sample file and a blueprint with technical guidelines for people interested. Once we can define the format we want, we should start.

Zack: I will be converting the FSI courses at my library into mp3 format, but I probably won't be doing any editing. I'm only concerned with getting the courses into mp3 format in the shortest time possible. Someone else can edit the mp3s that I encode if they feel it's necessary. I also won't be able to scan any of the books until I get a scanner (which may never happen), but the books are very easy to find in libraries and on online used bookstores. The downside is that the majority of the courses I have access to are not very popular. The first one I'm going to start on will be Vol. 2 of FSI Korean. I've chosen Vol. 2 because Vol. 1 is already available through Barron's and is much easier to find. After that, I'll probably do Standard Chinese: Module 9, unless Francois plans on doing it. I think the important thing is to get them into mp3 format, and then worry about the details later.
