Thank you for that reminder. Discussing Indian languages it is almost impossible to
avoid religion and politics entirely, but it is possible to remain polite. I meant no
offense to Russian members (which was why I gave equal grief to Europe), but it is
obvious even to me that someone could be offended by what I wrote. For that, I
apologize.

I see your post only slightly concerns me (since you quote me). I'd like to point out that you left the following out:

We have many very current examples of such image-building, but I won't dignify them by pointing them out. Every new event brings a "there they are at it again".
We just have to play our little part in dispelling them. |

I've never participated in aggressiveness in this forum, quite on the contrary. I generally ignore the bickering, to be frank.
Anyway, sometimes the answer to the original question is "politics". I think this is one such case (partly, at least).

Surely this qualifies as a personal attack?

Thank you for you kind responses. :-)
Yeah, there are certain times when language learners can't avoid politics, or at least not completely. For example, if you don't know where the local political "minefields" are, you can really get into a lot of trouble. And sometimes, certain cultural reactions make far more sense once you know some recent history.
But still, politics have an unfortunate way of making people angry, and of drowning out all other subjects of discussion. So while it might be OK to have an occasional post about "What language learners really ought to know when visiting country X," please let's try to avoid dragging every country's angry debates into HTLAL. :-)

If you wish to let us know about something, please see the "Report" button. However, in this case, I've already asked people to please avoid angry political discussions in this thread.
