This is true. And Genki was a bad example of something that could be used for kana only, because if I recall correctly they do drop some of the furigana completely. But there are many text books out there that have kana only, for example Japanese for Busy People, kana version. Genki is far superior though, IMO.

Thanks for all the replies, so i'll definitely be learning both written and spoken.
But now i'm super confused on where to start with the different books named like JLPT, Genki, Assimil and so on. Perhaps some more people can give their methods for learning Japanese? Maybe try Michel Thomas Foundation and Advanced, for the spoken part, if you're a beginner.

Rikaichan is available as Rikaikun for Chrome, and Furigana-Injector is also a nice app
