I'm sure others have experienced this, but I am at the point in my French studies where I don't feel like I am
learning anything as I am going through my lessons. Naturally I know that this isn't true, but it's an interesting
time. I am about halfway through the passive phase and nearly a week into the active phase of Assimil and have
noticed that I'm not really having any huge lightbulb moments like I did in the weeks prior. I'm not complaining or
anything, it's just interesting. I just have to push through this false plateau as I know my French is continuing to
grow. I might try to through in some native listening and TV this week to see how my comprehension matches up
to newscaster speed.

Still plugging along in French, gave a 20 minute diatribe to myself yesterday completely in French and also had a
long conversation with my French speaking friend. Overall I am very happy with my progress. If I can keep up my
consistency of study I would like to get through ALL of Assimil and Michel Thomas' French programs and see what
level those will get me to. Ultimately though, I think it will be me vs. the calendar as I do not necessarily want to
carry my French studies over into the new year. I've given up the notion of the multiple languages this year, unless
I manage to get through everything I want to in French, in which case I will move on to German. I'm finally
convinced of working on one language until you really grasp it before moving on to another language.

French is progressing still. I have finally got myself to working everyday on my French and did the math to figure
out that as long as I work every day I will get through all of my planned French program by Jan. 2, which is only 2
days past my planned goal when I changed my objectives for the year. I have also found that during the active
phase of Assimil my only real consistent issue lies with the little words (du, de, au, etc.)

I'm progressing nicely in French still. I did the math recently and discovered that I will be done with my French plan
within the first week of the new year, so I will probably just continue through and finish it and then move on to
German. I find that French comes to mind a lot quicker now than it used to which is nice. I still have trouble
understanding things in radio and movies though. The speed seems to get me, so I need to start upping my
amount of listening to native materials. I understand my friend quite well though and most in-person speech
doesn't seem to be as fast as media speeds. I also am going to start reading L'etranger in the next little bit,
although I am contemplating treating it like Assimil and finding an audiobook and English translation (especially
since Borders is closing and I can probably find a translation on the cheap). Either that or I may try my hand at the
Kato Lomb method of reading acquisition. For my goals as an opera singer I need to be able to read, hear and
react, and speak the language. So this will be my plan for the rest of the year I suppose. I'm excited that French is
becoming comfortable for me!

Well, I had my first lesson that kicked my a** today. I would like to blame it mostly on the content, gambling, which
I do not deal with much and thusly know practically no terminology for. However, the things that I have noticed
give me the most fits are the little words (de, du, des, etc.). My current plan is to just keep plowing away and let
them fix themselves through exposure. I have noticed that over the three weeks I have been in the active wave I am
getting less little words wrong, but I am still screwing them up more than I am content with. I am looking forward
to tomorrow and putting this really bad active wave day behind me.

I have had a rough spell where I haven't been able to study over the course of the last week or so. No excuses, I
should have made the time to do the work. Anyways I'm getting back to the grind now, I think I might try to double
up on day 6 +7 of the week in Assimil (the revision day and the day prior) to try and make up for the time lost.
Although, thinking about it time isn't a huge issue for me, so I might just stick to the one day at a time deal. I have
found it difficult to study on my days off from work (namely because my fiancee is with me and would rather I
spend time with her than study) so I need to determine whether I can work out a way to study those two days, or
just chalk it up as rest days.
As far as progress goes I am about two-thirds of the way through the passive wave and about a quarter of the way
through the active wave. I think that I am going to order the Advanced Course when I get to about three-quarters
through the passive wave. I am also about two-thirds through the first level of MT (I'm taking this very slow) and
already have the vocabulary builder and advanced courses loaded onto my computer when I am done.

I am now 75% through the Passive Wave Assimil and MT. I feel like my spoken level has kind of plateaued at the moment, but I attribute that more to my own slacking in study the last couple of weeks. On the plus side, the Active Wave is starting to flow out of me a lot easier, so I suppose I am making progress. I have noticed that in the earlier stages of Assimil I was able to remember things from the passive wave and use them in my day to day conversations, but as I get further in it is not as easy to do (it almost seems like there is more new things introduced per lesson), however I seem to retain them for the Active Wave.
Wanderlust confessional: Since Borders is going out of business and the entire store was 50-70% off I purchased the 7th edition of Wheelock's Latin for about $10. Since I generally take the weekends of from French, I think I am going to work through this for a change of pace. I do not really have any aspirations for Latin, just one of those spur of the moment type things.

Wow 10 bucks? That's an awesome price for such a good book! I hope you enjoy using that
book as much as I did. I took two semesters of Latin, and that was the text we used in
class. However; I think it will be equally valuable for self study. I really enjoyed the
translating exercises. I hope all is well and good luck with your studies!
