@canada38 Anki and Byki are both SRS programs, essentially a flashcard software. Byki uses a different
system of SRS than Anki, which I find to be an interesting approach. I have decided, however to use
Anki, as the free version of Byki does not take one very far, and I am very poor. Also, I can personalize
Anki considerably more. There is also much discussion of the programs (at least Anki) on this forum.
Below are links to both programs.

Hi JPike,
May I ask how you managed to reach your current stated level of B1/B2 in Italian. As
it is my intention to live abroad (in Italy), would you say this level would be
sufficient to do that. Also, I have just noticed I repsonded to your radiotimes
message in my own thread, so in case you don't see that post, there is an app for
smartphones that provides radio for virtually all radio stations in the world - I have
found it useful in the past when commuting - it#s called wunderadio.
I commend you on tackling arabic - from the outside looking in it does seem terribly
difficult. Is there any particular reason why you want to learn it?

@magictom123 I reached my level in Italian by spending six weeks in Umbria, where I lived with a
woman in her late 70's who spoke no English. I was able to get around pretty well with day to day
activities, however I do not think that I could hold long, deep conversations at this level. I think the
biggest thing for me was just trying to speak as much as possible. My six weeks was split into two
three week stints. The first three weeks, I did not speak very much but when I came back for my
second three weeks (a year later) I found that I could speak much more comfortably. I can't explain
this as I had no one to practice with over the course of that year.
As far as Arabic goes, I wanted to learn a Semitic language and Arabic is so prevalent in the world
that I felt it would be good to know. The most difficult thing for me at this early stage is learning
how to read the script, but truthfully, the spoken part of the language is not any more difficult than
any other language. Nearly all of the sounds are echoed in other languages and I think that that is
what scares off many people. They think that it sounds so different, but it really is not. This is the
first language that I really followed Michel Thomas the way they intend it and I have found that it is
very helpful for spoken.
Thanks for the app recommendation. I have a radiotime app as well for my smartphone which has the
same thing.

Day 4
Chapter 4 of 20 in Mastering Arabic, including 4 new letters bringing the total to 20.
20 minutes of Michel Thomas
6.5 minutes of Anki with 20 new cards
% of Alphabet Learned: 71.43%
Cards in Anki deck: 53
Hours Studied Today: 1.33
Total Hours: 5.58
The dates may seem that I slacked off a day, but I work overnights and tend to finish up my studying
for the day and update here. So I am still on schedule with studying every day.

Day 5
Most of Chapter 5 of 20 in Mastering Arabic, including 4 new letters bringing the total to 24.
50 minutes of Michel Thomas
1 minute of Anki. I have yet to add new vocabulary as I need to finish Chapter 5 before I input the
vocabulary.
% of Alphabet Learned: 85.71%
Hours Studied Today: 1.87
Total Hours: 7.45
I am only a couple of exercises away from finish Chapter 5, but my brain hurts from all the thinking
and trying to figure out what is required in one specific exercise. I will finish it in the afternoon after I
wake up so that I can do Chapter 6 when at work in the evening. Arabic at 4 in the morning is a little
hard on the brain after a while.

Day 6
Finished the remainder of Chapter 5 of 20 in Mastering Arabic
Completed Chapter 6 of 20 in Mastering Arabic, including 4 new letters bringing the total to 28.
75 minutes of Michel Thomas
12.5 minutes of Anki. I added 49 cards to my deck.
% of Alphabet learned: 100% (Completed!)
Cards in Anki deck: 102
Hours Studied Today: 3.57
Total Hours: 11.02
I had a relatively significant breakthrough today, I am starting to be able to read words I have learned
without their diacritical vowel markings in sentences. I am very excited about this as it was the aspect
I most dreaded about this language. It appears time heals all wounds.

Day 7
Completed most of Chapter 7 of 20 in Mastering Arabic
50 minutes of Michel Thomas
4.7 minutes of Anki - Added no cards today.
Cards in Anki deck: 102
Hours Studied Today: 2.18
Total Hours: 13.20
Avg. Hours/Day: 1.89
I nearly did not study today. I thought about taking the day off from the Mastering Arabic specifically,
but I have kept up a now seven day streak of studying and I do not want to break that trend. They
say it takes 21 days to build an activity into a habit, so I am striving to make it to that magic number.
I blame this log for keeping me on task. Since I have decided to log every day's activities I feel that I
cannot go a day without putting work in.

Day 8
Finished Chapter 7 of 20 and half Chapter 8 of 20 in Mastering Arabic
40 minutes of Michel Thomas
0 minutes of Anki - Added no cards today.
Cards in Anki deck: 102
Hours Studied Today: 1.58
Total Hours: 14.78
I had a bit of work to do tonight at work and thus could not study very much. Also, I did not have my computer with me this evening and could not do any of the listening that goes along with Mastering Arabic or my Anki. I tried to do some of the non-listening sections, but grew weary of skipping so much listening. Luckily, Chapter 8 is a review chapter.
On another note, I came across Moses McCormick's FLR approach the other day and I am thinking of trying this with Arabic after I finish Mastering Arabic. This will be in conjunction with other things as well, but it seems to be a good approach and so I will try it.
Hopefully tomorrow I can get back to my normal work routine, today was just pathetic!
