Day 9
Completed more of Chapter 8 of 20 in Mastering Arabic
50 minutes of Michel Thomas
16.3 minutes of Anki - added 25 new cards

Chapter 8, being a review chapter, seems to be taking me a while to get through. I only have a few
exercises left though, and should finish it tomorrow. I find that I am not remembering words very
well when writing, which is probably a sign that, though they are in my passive knowledge, I need to
activate them. At the end of this week I may trying writing a small blurb using as much of what I have
learned as possible.
I have to say that the Michel Thomas learning approach amazes me. As I mentioned before, I have
used MT before, but never the way it is prescribed. I find that the vocabulary and constructions stick
so much easier approaching the program as designed and I am thrilled with the ease of being able to
say that which I have learned thus far.

I've used MT for Italian and some of the French course and I also find that when done as
per the instructions, it is a brilliant introduction to a language. Good luck with your
continued studies.

I did not work the last two days plus my best friend is home from Mississippi for a week and a half.
Unfortunately I just was not able to make the time to study over the last two days. Now that I am
back to work I will be able to resume my studies to their normal numbers. If my mental fortitude
withstands, I may try to add some extra time over the next few days to make up for my two days of
slacking.

I downloaded the new Anki update, and now I cannot open Anki. I am hoping that the problem will
be solved soon. Chapter 8 took me so long, that I decided not to do any more today. I will get back
to a chapter a day tomorrow.

I managed to get Anki fixed. Unfortunately I forgot my bag with all of my work at the apartment tonight (stupid idiot that I am). I do have two observations to make however:
1.) I think I will easily eclipse my goal for Arabic for this cycle, so I may have to modify that.
2.) My spoken Arabic is considerably better than my written. I feel as though Mastering Arabic has not taught a single thing about verbs up to this point (nearly halfway through).
As a tool, I have decided that at the end of each month I will check my progress against a CEFR checklist so I can figure out what to focus on to better achieve my long term goals by actually setting short term goals.

I had all the intentions of the world of getting completely through Chapter 9 today, but during the
course of the day I managed to get a great kink in my neck/shoulder and I could only hold out so
long. The chapter is a relatively easy one though, and my intent is to finish it when I wake up. I have
been having issues with keeping my iPod fully charged and thus have run into some moments where I
could not work on my MT while driving to or from work. At some point I should really invest in a car
charger for my iPod. I am not thrilled with my averages this week. Hopefully I can bump up my Total
Average by half an hour this week, which means I need to put in a good 3 hours a day of work.

I need to get back to finish a complete chapter every day. I want to be done with this particular text
by the end of this month. I am finding that the things that I struggle to remember on previous days
go through a process in my mind going from no clue, to needing one refresher, to needing no
refresher. I like noticing things like this as they are encouraging for me. I think that this book is
finally going to delve into verbs in the next couple of chapters. After this book I am going to go
through a TY and implement some FLR techniques to it in the hopes that it will solidify grammar for
me. Unfortunately, I do not have the audio for my TY as I bought it in the used section of B&N.
