Well it's been a week so I suppose I will give an update. I am still progressing along in Assimil and doing fine. I
love that I generally learn some little tidbit every day and then get the chance to try and use it as I go through my
daily activities. I ordered the Michel Thomas today for something additional to do. I feel like a slacker only
doing
my twenty minutes of Assimil every day. I think that I am nearly to a level where I am going to delve into some
grammar work to tie up some loose ends in my knowledge (mostly tenses) in the not to distant future.
Wanderlust: This week I found myself wanting to look at Icelandic and Dutch. I didn't really do anything with
them apart from watching some videos on youtube. I still don't know if Icelandic is going to make its way into my
hit list, but Dutch has been there for a while.
ETA: I am going to update my learning plan probably next week and map out when I intend to move on from
French to German. My largest struggle is that I am having a difficult time finding an Assimil German book to
purchase which goes along with the audio I have. Depending on my French level, I may have to break down and
buy the French base language German program.

I am now halfway to the active phase of Assimil and I find that I am picking up quite a bit of comprehension
already. I also just received Michel Thomas from ILL and put that on my computer to play with. Also, I've been
making use of the free version of LingQ for the last few days. I have been really enjoying my French studies as of
late and feel like I am making good progress in the language. Talking with my my friend is helpful, although I tend
to find that I have a lack of things to say when I actually want to practice with him. One thing I have noticed is that I
have a hard time understanding French over the telephone. I'm not really sure why that is. My goal for this week is
to force myself to communicate more in French. I need to not allow myself the out of reverting to English.

Hey JPike1028, it's good to hear that your study of French is going well. I used to speak
French really well, but now I never have a chance to use it and I'm forgetting more and
more each day. Right now my schedule is too full (I hardly even see my girlfriend lol),
but perhaps later on in the summer we could practice French with each other once a week
or something.

Since it's been a bit since I've updated, I'll give a quick ditty before my shift replacement gets here. I spent all last week with my friend from Cameroon and spoke a lot of French, plus some Italian and some Spanish. I am beginning to navigate around the language pretty well, although I know that my vocabulary is still lacking for more advanced conversation. Since I was away for the last week I was not able to work on my Assimil or MT, but since I had speaking practice every day, I figure I didn't lose out too much. I already got back into the swing of things and completed both my Assimil and MT lesson for today. About mid-June I should begin the Active Wave on Assimil. I'm quite happy with how French is coming along. When I first began singing in this language I hated it, but now I love it just about as much as I do Italian.
@canada38 - That sounds like an idea, my schedule is all screwy though due to my work schedule (overnights). I'm also unfortunately not around my skype outside of my work shifts. Perhaps we could work something out though.
A tres bien tot!

I am about 8 lessons away from beginning the active phase of my Assimil. I think the most interesting thing about
Assimil is that I really only pick up a couple of new things per lesson, but my French seems to be growing by leaps
and bounds. I think I have said it before but I really like the combination of Assimil and MT. For whatever reason I
feel that it gives a really strong base in language. I'm interested to see what the active phase is going to provide me
with and how well I will do translating back from English to French. One thing I need to do however is get into the
habit of studying every day and not taking weekends off. I feel that those two days off, while they don't necessarily
hurt me, are slowing me down somewhat when I look at the big picture.
Wanderlust:
My friend has asked me to go with him to pray the Rosary with some people in Spanish, so I've been working on
learning both the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet in Spanish for the past week and a half. Not a huge issue,
however it is something not French so I feel I should catalog it.

The past couple of weeks have been a little slow for me. I should already be in the Active Phase of Assimil but I
have slacked off some due to some health issues with friends and family. I'm beginning to get back into the flow of
things again so hopefully I will enter into the second wave next week.

I hope the health issues are nothing serious and everyone is well soon.
I agree with you about MT and Assimil. It is a powerful combination. For all the
studies I've done and time spent with various resources, there are still times when a
grammar point explanation from MT jumps into my head. How do you find doing the two
together though with respect to their learning techniques? Assimil and MT seem to be the
opposite of each other in that one has you speaking and translating immediately whilst
the other is concntrated on passively listening and assimilating the material.
Good luck with your continued studies!

@magictom123 I like the two together. I am doing the MT very slowly, but I find that going through that really
solidifies things. Ultimately I don't really know how much new material I am learning from MT, but the
reinforcement is good. I think were I working on a language I didn't already have a decent base in that I would
appreciate the combination even more.
