Spent the last couple of weeks mostly away from language studies. I've left France now so won't be exposed to the same intensity. I am still yet to have started Splog's 'Spiral Method', i'm trying to understand to best way to use it for myself.
Notable highlights - Polyglot meeting - Several gatherings/parties with French only work colleagues - Chatting to Buttons and another friend for several hours. I saw several films and read a couple of books due to a 24 hour flight. I've begun to work my German and am up to CD 6 of Michel Thomas. I'm really enjoying this. Well I guess in a kind of abstract way I'm returning to the dear ol' blighty. Thankfully no VAT rise for me though.
Yes French has definitely helped loads in understanding certain things which were difficult to understand the first time round. I also am finding the French vocab I have to be quite handy. It has been a less painful process overall... ---however--- There are some interesting new grammar concepts and ungodly sentence structures to get my head around. I have completed the foundation course for Michel Thomas and I'm on the second run through now. My brain muscle has had a real work out, it was doing somersaults to try and make the asked sentences. As per normal making very quick progress in the beginner stage. I have also tried Learn in you Car German. I usually used Learn in Your Car French to supplement my other French studies and to revise. Learning from scratch is completely out of the question using this method BUT you do reinforce vocabulary and get some practice in. I think towards the end of the Learn in you car series you are doing some really hard stuff which Pimsleur and Michel Thomas don't or do not have the time to touch. I think it's fantastic. I just learned a couple of days ago that I did in fact pass my DALF C1 exam. It was slightly bittersweet because I did not finish with the mark I expected. Especially in regards to the written section where I got 9/25. I kind of expected a mark like this because I did surpass the word limit for the essay and apparently each word over is a mark lost, potentially leaving me with 0 for a section worth 12.5. I have sent an email away to find out if this was the case. Nevertheless I cannot have my result changed. I wrote the below the same day after the exam, so I realized something could go wrong.
Besides the written section I got 23/25 for written comprehension, a nice surprise indeed. I got 15.50 for the spoken section with the jury and I'm quite pleased with this because I feel this is a weakness. However 15/25 for the listening comprehension has left me a little bedazzled. I really thought I would be getting between 18-22 for this section. I was absolutely sure of everything except for four question worth one mark each. So overall 62.5/100 - I'm a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to my French so I plan to one day resit the exam. Overall I sat the DELF B1 In february last year and the DALF C1 the same year in December. So I can be pretty pleased with that. ------------------------------------------- German Almost through my second run through of Michel Thomas. Certainly easier the second time round. Have done the initial tracks from the 'Learn In Your Car' German series. Have also profited from a frankly decent collection of German language tools from the library. I have now the Michel Thomas Vocab Builder which I'll be doing next. I have a 'Teach Yourself German' audio conversation course which has 3 c.ds with transcripts, and finally a flash card computer program called 'Speak More German'. I am always on the hunt for Pimsleur German and I'm sure this will be a fantastic supplement for my other studies. Spending approximately 1 hour each day with German French I was maybe exaggerating just a little when I wrote I was doing no French study. I am in the middle of a light and fantastic read on a subject of high interest to me. It's a French guy who took a year off before he got too old to do a one year working holiday visa in Australia. He travelled around with almost no money in desolate locations. He is a very keen observer and a good simple writer. I'm just returning here myself after a couple of years away and it's good to read a travellers perspective of this country. I borrowed a course for vocab which involves word-image associations. I found it coma-inducingly boring. It's called 'Instant Recall French'. The method was not a success for me. I have also reseen a couple of films from last year in showing them to others. ---
I think initials are for almost total beginners, but by the third C.D it's very advanced. The 3 cds are 8.5 hours total. It's a good supplement to your other studies. I made a video in bad French and English.

Absolument fantastique!!! And don't spend any more time beating yourself up over the details, listening is nearly always the toughest section and often it's just a case of being lucky or unlucky on the day. The main thing is that you passed, and not because you're lucky but because you've put in lots of excellent preparation to reach an advanced level of French, and I'm absolutely thrilled for you! :D
