Merci infiniment, J'ai mis beaucoup d'efforts et des années pour y arriver. En fait, Je peux vous dire que j'ai mis exactement 4 ans depuis le commencement de mes études sans étudier vraiment une autre langue. Mon rêve maintenant est d'avoir la même niveau en votre langue en(dans?) quatre ans.
Yeh it is still a very tentative process at the moment. I haven't really developped a way to actually turn what I'm learning into knowledge. I think it is a very active process as opposed to how I usually learn which is a passive approach. ------------------- I watched three films the last week including one yesterday. I also squeezed in 2 hours of podcasts as I was communting yesterday. Somehow I feel after all that that it was a wasted day. I guess more of the same 'listening passively', I think I've gotta get of my butt and make my study much more active. I listened to a bit of teach yourself German conversation course the other day. I also downloaded all the Yabla German videos which are avaiable free on Itunes. They have English/German subtitles running at the same time. I don't understand a thing..... Yeh it's almost a guilty pleasure to listen to my favourite podcasts or watch a movie without a pen and a paper. I really want to activate all those words/phrasing I understand but don't use myself. German I skipped through some of the earlier lessons of Pimsleur and I'm sitting at lesson 25 now. My base in Michel Thomas has helped to understand the grammar which is not usually explained during Pimsleur lessons. Keeping concentration at 100% is just a little diifcult over 25 minutes but I try to soldier on. French I've seen two films this week both very enjoyable. I was lucky enough to stumble upon a 90 minutes documentary about Francois Truffaut last night. It was in French with English subs. It was interesting to learn more about the man behind the films (or in them). I will say tentatively my favourite film ever was Les quatre cents coup(400 blows) which was also his first film. I love stumbling upon famous celebs who've learned French to a very good level. They are very few and far between, which goes to show how hard learning a second language is. This week I learned about Ellen MacCarthur who speaks very good French with a pretty good accent. She was famous for sailing around the world solo. Sounds like you're already making good headway in German, and I'm sure it won't be long before those Yabla videos start to make much more sense. And if it's anything to go by, my concentration usually wanes after 25 minutes as well. Half-hour sessions of Pimsleur and MT aside of course, I find that aiming for 15-20 minute sessions of study with a mini-break in-between seems to work out much better in the long run.
Out of curiosity, I added Truffaut's "Les quatre cents coups" to my rental list on LoveFilm today. I've been far too long without French cinema already and it's time to make humble amends. :) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Ca farte?
I'm in no great hurry to learn German but I'm pretty pleased with my little progress. I hope those Yabla videos will start to make sense because it seems sooo far away now. I hope if and when you do watch 'Les quatre cents coup' you can enjoy it, if not, then let's agree to disagree :-) --------------------------------------------------------- I've been tugged away from language studies this week for several reasons. Principally because I'm taking wayyyy too seriously my other hobby which is long distance running. I've made some overambitious target time in a race 2 months away, which means I'm reading lots of running literature and websites for techniques, training, motivation etc.etc. As with language learning I'm very reasonable (anal) about making goals and sticking at them. It can be a little obsessive. I've found now that I've scratched the surface I'm wanting to know more and more about running. I think running and language learning are somewhat similar in that you are mostly solitary and you don't need to rely on other people. I think it's also easy to measure the end performance by either a race time or let's face it, if you are fluent or not, unlike with something like photography which is harder to measure and people can make greater claims. But I digress. (1)I saw a really great French comedy in the American tradition last night. It could have been my mood but I really enjoyed 'Brice de Nice'. A story about a surfer in Nice where there are no waves. If you are familiar with 'Point Break'(90's surfing film with Keanu Reeves), then you might enjoy even more this film. (2)I've almost at the end of Cinq Semaines en Ballon by Jules Verne. No surprise that I'm reading another one of his books, I've practically read them all. (3)I've listened to looaddss of podcasts. They can't make them quick enough. I get my news, film reviews, book reviews, science, philosophy, entertainment, general info from French podcasts. It's not even studying really. (4)German Pimsleur. I've learnt some new French today ("What's up?", "How's it going?" I think). Although at first glance, I must admit, I thought it was Swiss slang for "Qui a pété?". Merci, Adrean. ;) 1 person has voted this message useful |
