I reviewed all my index cards for the vocab from Meurs, mon amour, while I was prepping my MP3 with the new book+CD I got today, Tout est sous contrôle, (The Gun Seller).
It's full of wonderful satire and wit and so I can't understand a thing. But that's okay. I've just finished translating (with Reverso) the first two pages. It took about 40 min, but that's with me getting up and down to get another cup of tea, answering the phone and such... i'll try to keep accurate time tomorrow, because I want to have a rough idea how much time it's going to take for me to get through it. We'll see how it goes. The main thing will be to finish Meurs, mom amour. I still have to master a few of those index cards before I can leave chapter 1. I'd like to free up about half of the cards for new vocab for chapter two. So it will be a few days yet. As soon as I clear half the deck I'll move into some new material. Whatever time I have leftover from today has to go to my German studies. (I have to send my new assignment in to München this week.) I just sent my German assignment in -- I'm bracing myself for the critique which is sure to come tomorrow.
I was only able to get through my index cards today - no new French material yet. But I did manage to clear half the deck. Now I have a bunch of cards ready to be filled. Unfortunately it's 10 and I can't afford to stay up any longer. Gotta get up early.. I'm really looking forward to checking out more of Tout est sous contrôle when I have time. I think I'd better get the Eng. version. (I can get it for 50 cents at Amazon) I checked an actual excerpt out of chapter 1 and despite my best intentions with Reverso last time the translation was WAY off. I did a bit of work out of the listening comprehension part of my French DALF A2 prep book. The listening excercises are not bad. They vary quite a bit in difficulty, though. I'm doing one excercise and I think I'm on top of the world and French is a piece of cake, the next excercise I'm back down again and hitting the repeat button. one thing is certain: I don't know all of the vocabulary I should know for the beginning level -- in other words -- not enough words. That will clear up in time. As long as I keep reading.
My major problem right now is time, or rather lack of it. I'm not able to study more than 20, 30? min at a time, and I don't think the total time spent amounts to even one hour. I think that will change once summer hits. I'm slowly making my way into Chaptre 2 of "meurs, mon amour". I've filled in half the deck that I cleared from 4.7 I'm consistent with reviewing the cards and I'm adding on new stuff regulary. (I can't believe I'm actually consistent with the cards!) I haven't done much. The past two weeks haven't been the best. I've had a relatively minor heath issue, and next week will tell me if this small issue is to become a really big issue. I'm hoping it won't get to that point. I'm trying to adjust my lifestyle, eat right and basically improve my health a bit, so that's taken me away from my studies.
If all goes well then I've got some big plans for spring break. I'm looking forward to having two whole weeks of not having to drive two and from the school. I'm still working, but only in the evenings. In the meantime I'm still working my way through all the vocabulary in chapter 2. Okay, here's my plan for the Easter break:
"Meurs, mon Amour" 4.16 - Pages 18,19 4.17 - 20,21 4.18 - 22,23 .... Until I reach Chaptre 5. Considering how slow I am, that should be a feat in an of itself. I'm also going through the cards, which is really slow because I haven't studied at all. I have to finish this book before I begin anything else. I'm not sure I can finish it in two weeks but definitely before May. I might also listen to Assimil if I want to, but I still have stuff to do for German. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I'm in the middle of an experiment which should help my listening comprehension.
The problem is, I can read and recognize words and their meanings. When I listen to the text alone I can't catch anything. Classic foreign-learner-French-problem. Couple that with the fact that I'm not able to study more than 30 minutes a day -- well, obviously I'm not making much progress. If I continue doing what I'm doing now, which is flashcards and reading/listening I'm going to end up memorizing the book, or worse, giving up for something else. So here's what I'm doing. I've decide to use Arguelles' Skriptorium technique and instead of copying the text directly from the book I'm writing everything "transcripción fonética", phonetically. It's all previously translated text. I'm only using the book to make sure that what I'm hearing corresponds with my understanding of what's taking place. (A big issue with this book, since "above B1" is a tick above my comprehension level) My daughter is her first year and she writes phonetically to help her learn reading. The word "Radieschen" she writes as "Radisjen" (j=y). I'm doing what she does in reverse; that is, first the reading then the phonetics. It's kinda fun to let go of my "correct spelling filter" and just let my ear do all the work. I should be able to get a sense of whether it's working or not. If I'm right then my listening comprehension will soon be on par with my reading, and speaking should fall in line after that. That's my theory... 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Hi team mate, I just realized I haven't even introduced myself yet. I'm Renee. :)
I'm afraid I don't entirely understand the technique you're using but it sounds interesting. I used to have a lot of problems with listening comprehension as well, especially because it always seemed to me that the French speak unnecessarily fast. I would understand every word of a text if I read it but listening to it I just couldn't recognize the words. What I've found really helpful is listening to audio books while reading along with the text. Good luck with your experiment! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

That's exactly my problem too. If I continue reading and listening I'm going to end up memorizing the text. Some people can do that -- not me. I'm hoping if I just pay attention to the sounds (like music) I can internalize the language better. I'm workin' on it... 1 person has voted this message useful |
