Hey Sunja! It sounds like you're using smart.fm a lot. I logged on there to see if I could use it for my wordlists, and I really like the interface and games, but creating your own lists takes forever! Is it just me and my less than blazing internet connnection, or is it the site? I'd really like to use it, but it's so sluggish.

Keep it up! It's encouraging to hear your thoughts.

Hi cazgram!

My smart.fm user name is satsuya. If you check out smart.fm there's plenty of goals to choose from so you don't have to make lists. check out "AP French Reading Vocab: Le Petit Prince by Ariesxhope". Unfortunately no good English-French goals for HP. I have the first HP and I'd love to have a list already made. Which HP are you reading?

and indeed. I'm always at smart.fm (that's where I am now). It's a good discipline for me. Since I really want to be there studying, it works. I like it so much better than the dry workbooks that my poor students have to work out of (I'm reminded that I have to start my English tutoring again tomorrow). I tried one of those workbooks like Pont Neuf. First few pages and I lost interest completely. Yuck. Workbooks would only be good for me if I already knew the language and needed to brush up.

smart.fm seems to be running okay at the moment. I'm sure it has to be maintenanced constantly though. it's a good reason to have more than one place to dock setences/words. I tried finding other places to collect them but I can't find anything better than smart.fm. Flashmybrain is about 30 dollars or something, and doesn't even have audio, as far as I could tell. I can add audio to programs from Adobe or Anki, Memosyn etc, but it would be more time spent building the program - and it would be ME speaking, so that's not so good.

Back to work:

I'm beefing up my "French simple" list, trying to keep from finishing the goal (I'm at 87% completion or so). There's a lot of irregular conjugations to copy into my item-list today. Then I plan to add just one sentence with "du" and "de" where I had a problem in my activation phase of Assimil/leçion 3 (or 4?) this morning:

"do you have any cheese?", Qu'est que vous avez du frommage?
"No, I don't have any cheese" Non, je n'ai pas de frommage. I hope I got that correct this time. Not sure about the double consonant in frommage.

This is not going to be easy, but since I didn't have any trouble with the articles of things, I want to go through and change up the text a bit. Qu'est que vous avez du sucre? and so on and so forth --J'en passe et des meilleurs, --one of my items in "French, useful conversation" :)

If I feel up to it and I don't fall behind in the housework, I plan on dabbling in a bit of subjontif! I'm really excited about that one. I don't plan on getting too deep, just a few of the really used ones like "je sois" and "j'aie" and "je fasse". I just want to familiarize myself with it so I can recognize it. Maybe only about four sentences that I copied from a German forum about the subjonctif. I had to run the sentences through the translators a few times. The guy was knowledgable enough, but his French was riddled with mistakes. I think I cleaned it up okay and I'll add those sentences to the pile at smart.fm

EDIT: oops, sorry mods. That's quite a bit of German there. I'll have to switch to the German section the next time I start to ramble..

I've gotten a little bit further with Assimil. Leçion 50, 51 are getting better. I'm not stumbling over the speech as much. My voice is not exactly in sync with the speaker but I do a fair job at keeping up. I'm having trouble with the activation phase. Now I've run into some lessons with quite a bit of text. I tried to do 4-6 cold, without looking once at the French, but I haven't gone over those first lessons in probably over a year (!) and it was pretty hopeless. I need practice with sentence structure. I plan on translating these lessons (active phase) until I get it right. Luckily the sound and rhythm of is familar. That's the most important thing.

Easier than cold translation of Assimil is reading Qui joue avec le feu. It's quite popular so I'm sure many people here have read it. I read (and copied) the first chapter at work (I work for a tutoring company and their French-learner library is not bad), and I've ordered myself a copy. At 5 euros it was easy. I can't tell what level it is but the tenses are mostly le présent, passé composé with a few imparfait verbs thrown in. Just my size.

EDIT: I just finished looking up all unknown words for the first chapter. Just so I learn some grammar/conjugations I added all the sentences I thought would fit into my lists at smart.fm. I'm discovering some sentences with two tenses, where I think the imparfait works as a progressive past: Was doing something, when something happened. It's very interesting. I'm not having any trouble, though it's time-consuming to look up all these words and idiomatic expressions!

I just spent about 40 minutes catching up on three of the lists (about 10-16 items reviewed, then there were some new ones from last night.)

Did all the little grammar excercises for chapter one of Qui joue avec le feu - not a big deal - just 4x4 questions. A nice little check. I'm guessing that the book is for pupils doing French who are in their 3rd year of study. The vocab is challenging but it really takes it easy on the tenses and sentence structure, so it's a nice thing for me at this point.

Grammar: I could go over declination of adjectives and comparisons, I've never really spent any time with that.

Smart.fm: I have to remember that school starts next week and I'll be busier. I plan to cast off (unenrolling myself) 3 of my lists. there'll be no new add-ons/items for those lists. Yep, I've taken on quite a bit these past few weeks and now I think I need to pare down. There's always a list to work on. I like smart's "Recommended next" feature. I don't even have to think. I go in there tonight after work and three of my lists are available. Thirty minutes and basta, done.

Should I do the dication? Would it help? - The answer is yes. I spent only 6 minutes doing 5 sentences from one of my lists. (passé composé) and I made spelling mistakes (dernier, dernière, and étudié) in 3/5. I'll try to squeeze that into my smart.fm time, if not now, then when I've completed the lists and think I need some sort of a review.

Assimil is next. Earplugs ready, I'll be shadowing while I go clean the snow of the sidewalk.

here's a break-down of the Activation Phase; Leçion 8 Just to show where I am in the process

Sunja's French mistakes:

Est-ce que votre père est à la maison ? - CORRECT
Est-ce qu'il votre père à la maison ?- WRONG

If you were to translate back what I said in French it'd be "Does he your father at home?" -- :)

ne la dérangez pas - CORRECT
ne lui dérangez pas - WRONG

I'll have to review pronoms personnels complément d’objet direct et pronoms personnels complément d’objet indirect - I hope I can find an easier way to say that!

à quelle heure est-ce qu'il rentre normalment. - CORRECT
à quelle heure rentre chez lui - WRONG

I have a problem with "Est-ce qu". Here it sounds like I said "At what time returns by him." I think it would have been correct if I would have asked à quelle heure rentre-t'il normalment -- maybe?

I'll continue with 9 tonight. I have to make it up to 12 somehow. I'm behind on the Activation Phase. I want to move beyond 50 and 51 (My Passive Phase of Assimil), but according to the book I need to get a move on and try to activate those first lessons. I may have to take a break in the activation phase and read (an easy) book or two first. I don't seem to have the sentence structure down....I'm not sure if Assimil means for me to memorize the text. After three or four times that's what I'll end up doing. I'll stick to the book's plan and keep going...

Wow, that is one situation I should be taking advantage of! I hadn't thought of that one. I think we're supposed to get a whole bunch of it tonight, so I can look forward to getting up early and shovelling and shadowing.   =)
