I disagree. The voting system should, ideally, give an idea of whether someone makes useful contributions to the forum, not whether they're mister/miss popularity of the week.
Besides, your system, if I understand it correctly, would only encourage people to go around voting for every single post in a thread, which would hardly help to improve the already corrupted voting system.

But a useful contribution is an entirely subjective idea. I think that Chung's posts are very useful contributions, for instance, but they are completely useless for me, because I am not interested in languages he posts about.
Judging by the number of votes, Cainntair is the most valuable member here, but his posts are useless for me, because they are so complecated I don't understand anything. When I try to read his posts I often wish I were more intelligent. It is a nice feeling, but somewhat scary.

Of course not everyone is going to find the same posts useful. If you don't think Cainntear's posts are useful, then don't vote for them.

Now that I see that the number of votes is so important for some people, I click 'Useful?' under every post I've just read or have tried to read. Let them have a warm feeling of usefulness, I won't harm anybody, and it won't take too much time to click. I like reading this forum as I'm interested in polyglots and people who think they are polyglots. So, in general, the forum is very useful for me. |

minaaret, please don't do that! Of course I have no right to tell you what you "should" and "shouldn't" do on the forum, but it really ruins the whole concept of "usefulness votes" if you just vote for everything you read.
My recommendation is, every time you find yourself about to click that button, just make yourself re-read the text on the button: "Useful? Click to vote for this post." "Useful" is a very particular word. It doesn't mean "cool," it doesn't mean "popular": it means useful. Let's try to keep it that way.
EDIT: P.S. Clicking "useful" on obviously non-useful posts usually doesn't even give the poster him- or herself that "warm feeling." If I notice that someone's voted for my post which clearly wasn't useful, I just get annoyed and think "Oh, someone's abusing the system again."

For the record, I do use the voting system, but my two cents say it hasn't brought a whole lot to the forum. Often I don't even see the votes, or if I do I think "Hm, lots of people have read it." It doesn't necessarily mean I think a given post is special or not.
My feelings about the votes are more or less neutral. However, I did vote saying "positive votes only" because I like that it shows support to the post-writer.

Nothing I hope ! Cainntear always has interesting and instructive things to say. Even when one doesn't agree with him, he makes you think more deeply and objectively about the subject.
Minaaret, you are a bit cheeky for someone who has been on this forum only 1 month. A little less mouth and a little more quiet perusal of some of the excellent advice provided by the experienced members of this forum may in time render your posts as useful as Cainntear's. But at the moment I am beginning to suspect you are a troll.
