I voted for positive votes only.
Yes, the system is "corrupted" by the fact that many of us vote for not only useful things. But in general, I'd say it works. It's just that vote highlights not only a strictly "useful" post but simply a good post, worth reading (useful, good argument or interesting point of view, funny, agreed by more people, anything else?). I don't think it is necessarily bad.
Removing the voting would be good for nothing. If you dislike voting, ignore it. Perhaps there could be a function of your profile "ignore votes".
Negative votes would make much more damage than good. Imagine the newbies, often coming with their "new and miraculous" ways of learning in their first post. Would you click on "Useless? Cast your antivote."? Or a normal member of this forum who writes better and worse posts but always in a polite manner, would you anonymously scold them for a post which is just not as good as you think it should be? If there are true spammers or dedicated chronic authors of useless posts, negative votes won't change their attitude while a good reply to their post might work.
I'd say the votes currently serve quite well in both highlighting good posts and slightly motivating people (at least some kinds of people) to think when writing. Is there anything else you want them to do and which would require a change?
If you just believe they are overused, there are other options, such as restricting number of votes you can cast during a day.
What I fully agree with is that there should be an option to remove your vote for cases of mistake.

I think you might be referring to me actually. Anyway, going over the whole thread again after my last partaking... over time I've become disappointed of the vote system for the exact reasons you cite -- now I cast even less votes than before, if that's possible, and I pay pretty much no attention to them anymore.
So, if it were possible, I would change my vote to completely doff the system, and replace it with either one that separates 'I like' and 'useful', or nothing at all. But now that I mention it... can't I vote several times for that here? Mmh. Tempting... :)
What I did a long time ago -and was reminded by this thread just now- is a script to move the 'vote' links further away so it's less likely to be clicked by accident. Find it in the tech room.
It would be equally easy to write another one to completely hide the voting system for anyone who dislikes it enough.

I'm not sure whether I'm talking about the same type of votes or not, but since I've joined, I noticed my profile on the left getting ''3 votes''. Of course, that is nothing special, but what does it mean, that someone actually though I said something usefull, or is it something different?

It means three people have clicked the "Useful? Click to vote for this post!" link under
one of your posts. Like you may already have noticed, people on this forum (myself
included, I must admit) often use this button to mean "I like/agree" so getting a vote
for a post doesn't necessarily mean that it was useful.

I see, that makes sense. Thank you for explaining it to me.
I think the latter one counts in my case.
Because I can't really think of anything that's linguistically interesting from an introduction post.
Edit, because I just realised voting is anonymous, so what I said might not be correct.
Thanks again!

I think votes is a nice way of keeping us motivated to be constructive and not just write for the sake of writing. I have been on other forums were it was considered cool to have a lot of posts, with the result that lots of people wrote posts with just a smiley or one word, which was of no use to anyone.
On this forum, as long as I keep a sensible ratio between posts posted, and votes received I am trusting that people actually find some use in what I write.
And although my curious side would love to see who voted for me, I think it is probably better not to know. It would be awful if I felt I had to vote for someone just because we are friends, or I liked them. Since it is anonymous, we vote for the content and not for the person.
I am also sceptical about negative votes. Life can be tough enough without having to feel that people on this forum hate you.

Negative votes are a great deterrence against deviance from the general consensus.
Not going to lie—for me, the urge to down-vote comments I don't like is typically greater than the urge to up-vote comments I do like. :)
I voted in favor of both negative and positive voting. Viva la democracia!

And this is a positive thing? Because people with a controversial opinion that might shed
new light on an old discussion will be too scared to express it? How is that a good thing
to have on a discussion forum?

All the more reason not to have negative votes. We have had enough negativity on this
forum already.
