I double-checked, the bot didn't receive any tweet involving "#googlenews". This means
that you're probably protecting your tweets. Either un-protect them so that anyone can
read, or follow and bot and wait for it to follow you back.

I already logged in my first set of minutes for using some Kanji flashcards. I
LOVE this bot. I am such a stats nerd that seeing it put like that really makes me want
to do more.

Did you notice the detailed personal statistics, like

? If you diligently tag your
tweets, you can get a lot of information about your study habits. If I have some free
time this month, I'll even extend the bot so that you can see study time per day,
average session length and the like.

I sabotaged myself by offering to teach an intensive German class 4 hours a day this
week. That's why I wasn't able to do anything so far; I only just came home.

One problem I still have is finding some Hindi audio online. I've got one audiobook, but I'd like to have several hours of audio from a variety of speakers so that I can really get the sounds and rhythm into my head. Now that I think about it, the BBC Hindi site might be able to satisfy this for me, even though it'll be a while before I actually understand what they're saying.

The Hindi Urdu Flagship has a lot of Hindi audio online for free. And best of all, it is made by Rupert Snell, the author of Teach Yourself Hindi.

The most useful to you will be the "Glossaries Alive", which are 12-15 minute podcasts about the vocabulary for the chapters of TY Hindi. The video version is great because it has the Hindi in Devanagari while they say it, so I use it on my smartphone. So far they have covered chapters 1-12:

When you get a bit more advanced, or for more of a challenge, try the Spoken Thesaurus, which contains discussion of words on specific topics such as Friendship, Love and Hate, Health, Wisdom, and so on. There are three on Health because they specifically intended to help healthcare workers and doctors. The vocabulary is not necessarily difficult, but the discussion in Hindi is. The address is:

Finally, BBC Hindi (bbc.com/hindi) has a daily newscast:

Am I wrong in thinking you can only use the bot for one language?

I believe the bot will track all your hours but keep two separate score sheets. You can see here that there is one column for the time you have spent on your target language and another for your total time spent on languages.

I haven't signed up for the bot yet. I don't know at this time if I will. It seems registration is not so easy and I would rather spend my time on German.

Which brings me to the question I would like to ask: How do those of us who don't use the bot update our progress? Do we use this thread, create a separate 6-week-challenge-in-August thread, or simply panic (even though we know that language hikers shouldn't panic, just bring our towel).

All the best - and good luck to everybody. I will start my German ordeal in a couple of hours.

Here is a joke in the meantime: why was Lucky Luke not a good language learner?

Answer: He was too much faster than his shadowing...

It isn't that hard to sign up for the bot. If you don't have a twitter account, set that up first. Then tweet this (changing the bits as appropriate):
@6WCBot I want to #register to study #French intensively in August. #HTLAL user; working #part-time

Then check the rankings website: http://6wc.learnlangs.com/
You should be listed there right away.

I was also worried it would take a long time, but it was actually really easy.

You only declare one language, because there can only be one main target language for
this challenge, to discourage people from spreading themselves too thin. Let's say
Italian is your declared target. You can still tell the bot about your progress in
#German, #Chinese, whatever, and the bot will keep track of these languages, too, they
just add to the "total score" column. Time you spend on your declared target language
will count towards "target score" and "total score", so it's more worthwhile.

You can do whatever you like. You can use an existing language log or create one just
for this, or forget about logging entirely; up to you. The high score at
http://6wc.learnlangs.com is only for Twitter
users.
