I've enjoyed them in Polish where I was definitely a beginner :)
No stage has to be unpleasant, it all depends on the methods. Though it's nice that you agree with me that the beginner stage is less fun than the intermediate one, which many hate.
And the level is not the only factor that matters, especially for extensive reading or listening. There's no direct correlation. My Italian is better, yet it's more tiring for my brain than Spanish.

That probably has to do a little with the fact that Spanish is so close to Portuguese. I can read probably 75% of Portuguese without having spent more than 10 hours on it because of my Spanish.
It doesn't look like my Portuguese course will be here before the 6WC starts, so I will probably be doing Croatian.

This challenge seems like a good thing to do - I might join you guys with Finnish.
Most of my work will be done in English however - have to work towards the IELTS test. Not very pleasant. Training for specific types of questions/exercises rather than general usage seems rather pointless to me.

I've just registered to do German and I'm very, very excited.
I agree Serpent, being a beginner is the worst. But I could only appreciate that after picking up a new language from scratch having already reached a level in another where I could enjoy (rather than just attempt to struggle through) native materials.
I would love to finish this 6WC confident enough to start reading easy German novels and articles. Is this possible or am I just getting ahead of myself with the excitement of finally picking up a language which uses the Latin alphabet?

All three are quite close of course. IDK why Italian is doing this to my brain XD I've actually "studied" it longer than Spanish. This brain feeling tired thing doesn't necessarily have to do with how much or little I understand. It's also stressful when you can understand everything but every single bit requires an effort!

Spanish is a lot closer to Portuguese, though.

I'm thinking of giving this a try. My first challenge on HTLAL... yippee!
I'm unclear about registering.
I know I type this... @6WCBot I want to #register to study #Japanese intensively in
August. #HTLAL user; working #full-time.
but do I put my HTLAL username in where is says "user"? If not, is my Twitter alias going
to show up instead?
Anyone else doing Modern Greek?
