Ironically, for a challenge which is based on the principle of studying as much as you can, I think the most important lesson I have learned is that I need to chill out and just study as much as I want!
I've learned to love the German language. I haven't made exceptional progress, but I now have an overview of the most important features of the language and, in my own estimation, have gone from knowing practically nothing to knowing...something! I can spell German words with reasonable accuracy and my pronunciation (for somebody who has no natural discernable talent) is not too bad. I can form basic sentences, handle the future tense and past tense (to some degree) and handle modal verbs. I can make comparisons and have a certain amount of fun with adjectives. I understand things like the case system and separable verbs in theory, but I think it will take me a bit longer to get it in practice. I've also had quite a bit of fun making connections between what I've been learning about German and what I already know about French and Japanese.
My husband has also been taking part (twistedlogic1 on Twitter) but is unlikely to post here. He was a bit of a slow starter, but he's really surprised me by going from being a stereotypical Brit convinced he is no good at languages, to actually sitting down with German for 1-2 hours nearly every day.

Good point heh. I didn't aim to study as much of my TL (Spanish) as possible this time. Given the unusual situation that led to it being chosen, and given my mixed feelings about it (Spanish basically entered my life on its own, I never loved it as much as I love Portuguese and Italian), I think I'd end up hating it if I tried to study it as much as I studied Polish in May. I'm satisfied with hitting the 40h mark. In fact, giving in to the "guilty pleasures" (as Portuguese and Italian are more important for me, but there's more fun stuff in Spanish) has made me love Spanish more.
The 6WC has also taught me to estimate time better :D It used to be tiring to keep track of the minutes spent, but now I can usually tell how much time has passed.

It was surely fun to take part in the 6WC. For me, it was a strong motivation to study each day. I wouldn't say I made really significant progress but I feel I'm on the right way.

This is my first 6-week challenge, and it's definitely forced me to focus more. I tend
to day dream and drift off a lot, especially when I'm studying a language. I put pressure
on myself to keep my focus tight so that I could honestly record a fifteen or thirty-
minute chunk of time.
Also, I'm with Serpent - it's time to test Woodsei's Japanese!!!

Congratulations go foremost to Woodsei, who studied more than double the amount
of target language hours than anyone else. How is your Japanese now, Woodsei?

What were the final scores ? As a slight aside, I just totalled my study from the 1st of August to the 12th of September, and it came to 127 hours. Would I have been in the running ?

Is that on one language or all languages combined? 127 hours is impressive anyway.
Top target-language scores (the one language that people focussed on):
1. Woodsei - 283 hours 11 minutes
2. satsuki_055 - 126 hours 37 minutes
3. jefflehman68 - 107 hours 8 minutes
Top total language study scores:
1. serpent849 - 329 hours 17 minutes
2. JPP4 - 326 hours 43 minutes
3. Woodsei - 320 hours 39 minutes
Scores for earlier challenges were similar:

Unfortunately, that was all languages. I just realised my total was wrong. It came to 131 hours (Spanish-71hrs,French-59hrs). Thanks for the link. I can't believe how much study people managed to complete. Congratulations to all.

Yes, I have been thinking about the 6 week challenges for next year. Although I am somewhat uncertain about what will be going on in my life next year there is nothing wrong with planning ahead. My list (for now) of languages for the 2012 6 Week Challenges:
February - Thai or Finnish, most likely both.
May - Polish
August - I know I will be attending a family reunion sometime in July or August, but I want to learn French
November - Undecided. I am considering German, Icelandic, Hungarian, or Russian.
My plans for August and November could, and probably will, change. The plan for February is almost set, but only studying Polish in May is absolutely certain. |

Looking back, I realize that I'm not good at predictions.
The February and May 6WCs were absolute disasters, February because of illness and personal stress which caused me to drop out, May because of my brother visiting. For those reasons I got maybe 25 hours total for both months. August was one of my better 6WCs, but I focused on improving my Finnish and didn't learn French.
Maybe I'll learn either Hungarian or Hindi for the November challenge, if I do it at all. I know I will miss one week in November since I will be out of town babysitting two of my nephews.
