This would be my first time so I don't quite understand all of the rules, but I'll read up and probably do Spanish. This month I focus on French.

I think it'll be French for me.

Why Slovak and not Czech? |

Maybe because http://www.slovake.eu is an awesome language resource... |

Wow, that is a good resource, I think I'll use that myself. :)))
A foreigner learning Slovak will have a lot of difficulties (you won't understand much and they might not even understand because they'll think that you're trying to speak strange Czech) in Prague though, no matter how good the resource.

I'll probably do French as I think I could get pretty far in 6 weeks.

That's not quite what I've gone through in Prague. If the foreigner has learned enough Slovak to speak reasonably correctly and clearly (i.e. go beyond a tourist's / survivor's level), making oneself understood orally isn't a big problem. When I've been in Prague, I've spoken Slovak without any misunderstanding from the Czech side. However for this foreigner to understand the Czech coming the other way requires either some familiarity with Czech or a quite advanced level in Slovak so that he/she can "fill in the blanks" (i.e. interpret the Czech through Slovak). In my case, I've learned some Czech in addition to Slovak so that I can stick to speaking Slovak but understand the Czech.

1. Because I meet a lot of Slovaks who do not speak any language I speak
2. Because I have already bought the Slovak course.
Since I am only going for a weekend, we are just talking survival phrases here, and since the two languages are supposed to be as close as Norwegian and Swedish, I'll just take the one I need the most.

You're right that if your Slovak is good then it's no problem, but, as she says, Solfrid Cristin only wants a survivor level.
Sorry for taking this thread away from the original topic!

I was hoping to try out German, but I'm not sure how I'll be able to manage any more declensions. Declining and conjugating are definitely my weak points.
