I went through etymology of Vietnamese words for 1 to 10, and they are all of proto-Khmeric origin. I think that means we are probably out of luck. I found this:
So that looks promising, but unfortunately the etymology of Korean 다스 "da.seu" is from Japanese and that from English "dozen". D'oh! Definitely sounds related. Too bad about Mandarin using a different word/pronunciation.
If you come across a language genie, let me know :) But if I ever meet one maybe I'll just wish to be fluent in 3 languages and skip the studying... :D
That's too bad, numbers seemed promising with the overlap between Japanese and Korean Warp3 pointed out and Mandarin also would've fit. How about 비 "bi" - rain? I heard it's the same in Japanese. Or 준비 "junbi" preparation - I heard it pronounced very similarly in a movie I watched in Mandarin. Sure is, as Japanese doesn't have any final consonant (except /n/), they add an /u/ after borrowings from Sinitic, so the /hok/hak/ from any Sinitic language (except Mandarin...) is quite close to gaku. Then sei is also close to seng/sing ("close" when looking at Japanese phonological system I mean). Oh, the original reason I posted here was to know if I could possibly join the team? I've some higher intermediate (or advanced perhaps, never feel too confident about using such words) skills in Mandarin, which I just want to maintain. My main goals for 2012 are Korean (now at a TOPIK 2 level, aiming as far as I can for the rest of the year) and Classical Chinese (improving my comprehension and start reading some nice works... occasionally composing for fun, if I'm brave enough).. and possibly some more, a year is long! Oh, I realise what I've said is not entirely complete. It should be "add a /u/ in Sinitic borrowings when that borrowing ends in a stop" (what is called the "entering tones". 入聲)

Language learning is forever. I say, Welcome aboard! Just make sure to do a little each day or else your enthusiasm may take you in other directions. I find that if I schedule a half hour, or even 10 minutes for more than one time during the day, that I can remember more and look forward to the practice. If I try to do a huge practice, like saying "I'm gonna study four hours today" and do it uninterruptedly, then my mind gets fatigued, and I'm just not as effective. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||
