Hi all,
Wow, romance languages are mega-popular this year, I don't recall in all my time here
seeing such a flurry of interest.
In terms of team captain, I would be pleased to support any of you for the role.
However, I gather a practical aspect to choice of captain relates to the ability to
post links. This is something that becomes available to those new to the forum after
either a certain number of posts or a certain length of registration time (I believe it
originated as a anti-spammer response). It does not take terribly long to obtain that
ability.
If it is agreeable to the current members (I believe we are currently at 15 now), I
would be pleased to act as interim team captain say until the end of February or
March, for organizational purposes just to get our momentum back and TAC underway. I
have previous TAC experience (at least up until the point I get distracted by something
shiny elsewhere and drop out). Perhaps later in February or so we can see how the
landscape looks, who is still in (I hope all of us) and how best to continue and elect
a new, better, less easily distracted team captain. By that time, I believe all of you
currently without the ability to post links will have acquired it, and I will gladly
relinquish the reins of power (unless I have in the interim change the constitution and
entrenched for myself the role of emperor for life, just saying).
Does that sounds agreeable? Feel free to PM or post here. Despite it being a super
busy time for lots of us right now, it would be great if we could nail this down asap.
As for a team name, it would be good to nail one down. A bunch of good suggestions
were kicked around previously, including the following:
- Romulan
- Romanice loqui
- discere et docere
- aut disce aut discede
- romani ite domum
One dork facetiously suggested Sparta, but luckily that name got nabbed already by some
other folks for whom it actually fit.
I am in favour of either of the first two, in that order. I am fine with any of them,
but would suggest the final three might be better team slogans than a team name, just
from a letter length perspective; in my view it just would take too long (and too much
space) to type out some of the other suggestions multiple times and in cramped thread
name slots. I can set up a poll if folks want or perhaps we can just nail it down
here - what do you'all think?
Spanky

Further to my previous post just now, I should point out I am only actively involved in
learning French so I am not well-placed to deal with other Romance language issues. I
do have an interest in learning most of them, at least to some level, at some point, so
I anticipate the team logs to be of interest for me.
I did have the opportunity recently of attending this Italian class, which gave me at
least a taste of the language:

Spanky, I am so happy to see you raise to the occasion! I am a manager in my day job (which believe it or
not is not related to this forum :-) and one thing I have learned, is to draw on the strength of the people you
work with. Some of you may be new to the TAC, but so were all of us at some point! Two years ago I had
nothing but a lot of enthusiasm to bring into the bargain, but you learn fast! That enthusiasm and the fact
that you can look around and pick up good advice from other teams may yet bring you to the top! Get your introductions done, and start up your logs, and your staring problems will soon be but a faint memory. Good luck!

Thank you, Spanky, for taking on the job as temporary leader. I am currently looking for a long-term leader for this team. I think with a bit of guidance, you will be fine. Unfortunately most of you have not been on a TAC team before and inexperience is causing the team to disintegrate. I think with Spanky as interim leader, you will be able to come together as a team and make a strong start. I will, of course, continue to search for someone to take up the reins after him.
May I suggest that you choose as short a name as possible? There is a limit in the number of characters allowed in a title and it's not a very high limit. You need to have room for something besides the name of the team.

I've finally caught up with what's going on in the organisation. I'm very busy at the moment; I'm off work for a few weeks, which somewhat paradoxically means that I've had less time to spend on the forum than usual because I'm not stuck in front of a computer all day. It seems that I'm currently torn between the two Romance teams. People have suggested for me to be the longer-term leader of the first Romance team. Since I've been on the forum for a while and already been through two TACs, and my interest is firmly in Romance languages, that would make me a good candidate. I've also been asked to transfer to the second Romance team, since it seems to be more serious and coherent.
I'm not sure what to do for the moment, especially since from the start I was all for the idea of having one big team and letting it sort itself out, and that would still be my preference as I see no point in unnecessarily dividing people and I'll probably end up reading everyone's logs anyway. I can see the attraction of joining the second team, but at the same time I'm not sold on the idea of having one team just for senior members and one just for newbies, which is the way that it seems to be going.
So for now I'm remaining undecided, but I thought I should at least let everyone know what's going on for me.

@garyb If you decide to be on Romance 1, I believe it would be nice to have you as our team leader. We need someone with experience since, well, this team is basically a newbies team, I think almost all seniors fled or late registered on PAX.
If not, I think Spanky would be a nice interim captain until we decide if this team will actually exist, since most members are not super active and I already posted about my perception. Anyway, it is still really early to tell.

I agree as well - garyb, I would readily vote for you over me as team leader if you are
sticking with the team, and I hope you do. I put myself forward only because I was not
sure how long you were away from the forum. Let us know as soon as you can.

Well, I'll vote for the name "Romulan".
And I'm very happy that you take the initiative - we need to have a team leader! :)
