I'm glad to hear that NFWE is working out so well for you! Without that course, I would probably never have succeeded in reaching a useful level in French—it was just the perfect thing at the perfect time. Whenever you're ready for cool stuff to read and watch in French, just post here on HTLAL, and tell us (a) what kinds of books, TV, websites and movies you enjoy in other languages, and (b) what level you're at. The folks around here can provide copious recommendations for almost any taste and difficulty level. Or, for fun, just browse around SensCritique, which is an enormous database of French movies, TV, books, bandes dessinées (French graphic novels, which absolutely rock at the intermediate stage) and even video games. Here are my personal lists of bandes dessinées and SF/fantasy novels for intermediate French students. We also have a collaborative list of TV series and movies with accurate subtitles. emk - Wow, thank you so much! One of the problems I had with French the first time around was that I couldn't find any native content that I enjoyed. I saw a lot of good movies (Les Roseaux sauvages comes to mind, as well as La Haine) and read a few decent books (Arsène Lupin, gentleman cambrioleur comes to mind), but none of them are something that I'd actively seek out.
Both of the links that you posted are actually exactly what I'm interested in. Thank you so much! Now, I wonder if there are any French stores that ship to Korea... Hekje - I really like Indonesian! I traveled to Indonesia last year and was surprised by how many words I was able to learn in just a few weeks. These days a big reason I want to learn it is because one of my best friends is Indonesian. (He actually speaks a number of obscure regional languages as well.) I'd quite like to be able to understand more of his posts on Facebook... haha. If I try to learn Indonesian I won't be able to put the same amount of effort in that I've been putting into Korean and French. I doubt I'll be able to do more than 15 or 20 minutes a time, one or two times a week. Is that amount of time even worth it? I'm not sure. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

The Stranger: 164-188 Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.1: 11-22 Good Doctor: 1 episode Radio Free Asia: 1 hour Grammar (으면) -ㄹ수록 - gradually - 날이 (가면) 갈수록 한국어를 더 이해를 할 수 있다. As the days gradually pass, I can understand more Korean. Yeah, the studying this week was... not so good. I don't really have an excuse. Unfortunately, due to work commitments it's unlikely that I'll have a lot of time to study in the next few weeks. I finally finished The Stranger! There were moments when I understood every word, and then I would spend pages with a confused look on my face. It was not, shall we say, at my level, but I'm going to look on the bright side: it was 188 pages of active input. It certainly didn't hurt my Korean at all. In contrast, Harry Potter is 50x easier to follow and understand. Maybe it's because I've read the first book so many times in English, but thus far I understand a significant amount of what is happening, and I'm picking up words through context as well. Progress. I've also been reading 와라! 편의점 while taking public transportation. Each comic is quite short and depending on the comic I understand anywhere from 45-85%. Not bad. I seem to be reading roughly 10 comics per bus ride, which is a pretty decent pace. This week I'm going to make an effort to do the next Iyagi. I also want to choose a random song and translate it to English. I did that with my tutor today (김동률의 그땐 그랬지) and I think it will be a useful exercise. I think I'll do 그댄 달라요 by Busker Busker since it's my favorite Korean song by far. (I'm also particularly good at singing it at noraebang... haha.) 숙제 A quick note: I'm quite proud of these dialogues. French Assimil Passive: 66-73 They finally introduced the "house" verbs, which conjugate with être in the passé composé. I seem to recall them all, so good on me. They're also introducing le futur, l'imparfait, and possibly the conditional, but I could be mistaken. It's all going well enough, but I don't think I'd be saying this if I were starting French without any prior knowledge. It's hard to believe that I've been doing a lesson a day since the middle of August. Assimil Active: 17-24 The active lessons were okay, with the massive exception of lesson 22. I like the repetition of a lot of the concepts in the book, particularly when you do an active lesson just to see the same phrase or grammar point the next day in your passive lesson. However, some of the vocabulary just isn't repeated very often, which happened with lesson 22. I obtained some bandes dessinées and I'm currently reading Pride of Baghdad by Brian K. Vaughan. The art is gorgeous - such a feast for the eyes - and the French level is right on target. I don't understand every word, but I understand a lot. I can't recall seeing the definition of "gradually" used for that form. If I had to simplify that form into a single word, I think I would go with something like "increasingly" instead. The idea is that the more the first part happens, the more the second part becomes true. Two frequent usages of this form are: (보면) 볼수록 좋아(져) = "the more I watch it the more I like it" (referring to a TV show, movie, etc.) (들으면) 들을수록 좋아(져) = "the more I listen to it the more I like it" (referring to a song or singer) Also, while I'm looking at my SRS cards for this, I see a good example listed from the first verse of T-ara's song "Cry Cry": "넌 마치 문신처럼 / 지우려 할수록 깊게 패여" which roughly translates to "You are like a tattoo; the more I try to erase you, the more deeply you sink in." yuhakko - thank you! ^^ Yeah, I like 와라! 편의점... it's at a good level for my current abilities and I like how short each comic is. I never find myself having to stop in the middle of a comic.
Warp3 - I based my own example/translation on how my tutor explained the concept (similar to 점점 but not - she explained it in Korean, hence my fail at understanding). I haven't had much luck finding resources that explained this grammatical concept clearly/in a way that I actually understand, unfortunately. "Increasingly" is definitely a better translation than "gradually," and your examples are great. Thank you for the help! 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

What I Did - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.1: 22-64 - Iyagi #6 - learned the lyrics to Busker Busker's 그댄 달라요 Vocabulary Sogang 4A: 12 Iyagi #6: ~15 (I forgot to write this number down) It was a busy week. I'm lucky I had the time to do the Iyagi, but somehow I fit it into my schedule. Unfortunately this week will be even busier. I think my goal for the week is to study Iyagi #7 and learn the lyrics to another song. I'm thinking Roy Kim's 봄봄봄. (I already know what it means, but I want to focus on the words/grammar.) Harry Potter is going well. I'm just reading 15-20 minutes a day. I don't understand every word, but I understand what's happening in the story, so that's an improvement over The Stranger. I may not have the time this week, but in the future I'd like to bump my reading time to 30 minutes a day. (I already read roughly 1-2 hours a day in English, so this shouldn't be a big deal... I hope.) French Passive: 74-81 Active: 25-32 The last few (passive) lessons were a step up in difficulty, but they weren't too bad. I wouldn't say that a LOT of what I'm learning is new, but it's nice to encounter words and concepts from my last attempt at the language and understand how they work now. 1 person has voted this message useful |
