What I Did - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.1: 171-215 - Iyagi #8 (plus reviews of 1-7) Vocabulary - Sogang 4A: 34 - Iyagi #8: 22 - Yonsei Reading 3: 11 Grammar -을 만하다 - to recommend something because it's very good Ex: 강천사라는 절에 가을에 갈 만해요. 단풍이 진짜 아름다워요. I recommend going to Gangcheonsa in the fall. The foliage is really beautiful. Looking back, it seems as if I hardly did any work in the last week - but it was quite a busy week because I had so much going on. Not to go too much into detail, but I am researching graduate school and trying to figure out if I should extend my contract at my job. Interestingly, in Korean tutoring last night I showed a tremendous improvement. I was rattling off every answer with surprising fluency and I didn't fade toward the end of my lesson, as I am prone to do. With any luck I'll be able to maintain the momentum in the future, because it left me with a serious adrenaline rush. I did some writing this week for class (directions/recommendations, primarily) but it all reveals information about where I live/go so I'd prefer not to post it on the internet. Of course, it doesn't really matter, since I doubt anyone on here lives in my city... French Passive: 100-107 Active: 51-58 Oh boy. The passive lessons got quite difficult this week, due to the introduction of the formal register. I've been finishing the exercises based on memory for the duration of my Assimil-ing, but this time around I referred to the text if I needed to. I'm good, but I'm not that good. I'll be done with the passive wave within a week, which is exciting/terrifying. What should I do next? On the one hand I'd like to take a bit of a break, but I really like dedicating at least 30 minutes a day (well, 40-50 these days) on my studies. I think I'd regret taking a break at this point, particularly when I'm going to France next month. One option is immediately start in on Assimil's Using French text and see how it goes. Hmmm...that's a good bit different from what Let's Speak Korean gave for that concept. For reference, here is the info I have on that grammar form (from Let's Speak Korean episode 106): V+(으)ㄹ 만하다 = to be worth V-ing (but not particularly great) 좀 짜지만 먹을 만해요. = It's a little salty, but it's edible. / It's a bit salty, but worth eating. 우리 프로그램 좀 짧지만 봐 줄 만해요. = Our program is a bit short, but worth watching. I wonder if that construction really means simply "to be worth V-ing" (without either the positive or negative automatic implications) and the meaning they noted from the examples in LSK only really work out that way because of the ~지만 that existed in all their examples. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I also know the concept as "to be worth doing". It's applicable to Tarko's example as well. Of course saying that something is worth doing is often a recommendation, but I guess it wouldn't work in every case...

True, but LSK 제106회 seemed to intentionally emphasize the fact that it wasn't a
ringing endorsement of whatever you were describing (which is what confused me when I read the definition Tarko had posted above). Again, though, that may only be because all their examples were preceded with a ~지만 statement (which would explain it since ~지 만 forces the sentence to automatically show a positive and negative aspect by design). Regardless, I'm glad Tarko posted that since it made me rethink that grammar form and I feel I understand it much better now. I guess that's why so many people recommend learning a language from at least two courses, so you can see the same concept from slightly different angles giving you a deeper understanding. (Similar to the way you seem to understand the true meaning of word more as you continue to see it in slightly different contexts (which often separates the meaning further from whatever word you originally linked it to in another language).) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Yeah, some (okay, a lot) of the grammar I post I get straight from my tutor, who doesn't explain the grammar in English, but does confirm if what I think it is in English is relatively accurate. I assume that a lot of the grammar I post has more than one connotation, but what I post here tends to be he explicit context I've learned. Any other connotation tends to be gained through contact with the language over time.

What I Did - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.1: 215-229 - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.2: 11-42 - Iyagi: reviewed #1-8 about 4 times each - talked on the phone with a Korean friend for 1 hour x3 Vocabulary - Sogang 4A: 13 Not my best Korean week. I came down with a bad cold, as did my tutor, so I missed out on Korean class on Friday. My sudden leap forward in speaking ability last week appears to be sticking, since class went even better today. Speaking for several hours with a friend who doesn't speak English (well, very minimal English) didn't hurt. French Passive: 108-113 (finished!) Active: 59-65 Hunger Games: 1-5 I finished the passive wave! I've decided to take a week off before starting Using French, and in the mean time I'm going to focus on reading the Hunger Games in French. My goal for both Harry Potter (in Korean) and Hunger Games (in French) is to finish them before the end of the year. Not gonna lie, reading books in three languages at one time makes me feel pretty badass. (It'll feel even better once I understand everything...) 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

What I Did - Seogang 4A - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone vol.2: 43-96 - Iyagi #9 (and 1-8 4x each) - Yonsei Reading 3: 담양 대나무 축제 74-79 Vocabulary - Sogang 4A: 10 - Iyagi #9: 10 - Yonsei Reading 3: 24 It looks like I did a lot of studying this week (and, well, I did), but at the time it felt as if I was being lazy and procrastinating. I've figured out that if I maintain my current pace of 5.5-6 pages a day of Harry Potter I should be finished by the end of the year. Well, before I head off on my trip. Grammar -다고 봅니다 - “I think...” (rough translation) → 집안일 도와주는 로봇이 좋다고 봅니다. I think a robot that helps with housework would be good. -지 않겠습니까 - “Isn't it...” “Wouldn't it...” (rough translation) → 카페에서 공부하면 시끄럽지 않겠어요? Wouldn't it be noisy if we study at a cafe? French What I Did - New French With Ease Active: 66-73 - Using French Passive: 1 - Hunger Games: 6-81 In spite of an incredibly busy day, I somehow managed to start the Using French textbook today. I have two problems with it, based entirely on the first lesson: 1) I really don't like the speaker's voices, and 2) They speak so SLOW. I may have a case of selective memory, but I don't remember them speaking this slowly even at the beginning of NFWE. I sure hope they speed up soon. I realized that I'm going to have to read approximately 12 pages of Hunger Games a day to finish before the end of the year. It takes me roughly 30 minutes to read that much.
