Awesome idea! Thank you very much for posting this.

Spanish

Hola Lisa,

Quanta gente vive nela? Onde você costuma sair a noite?

That's very well put, almost no mistakes :) but there is one or two expressions that sound odd that i'd like to point out, so here's the correction:

"Oi Lisa,
Quantas pessoas vivem nela?

You could also say "Aqui vai" instead, which is a bit more colloquial and IMO sounds better for this situation.

To ask about "population" you have to use "pessoas", "gente" would sound weird here.

You are right, that is a bad Portunhol mistake! "cuanta gente vive en esta ciudad?" would be correct Spanish.

Here's my attempt in Hungarian.

Szia Lisa,
Itt van egy levelezőlap a városomról. Nem nagyon nagy, de király. Mondd el tovább a városodról. Hányan laknak? Mi van különösebben szép róla? Hová szoktál szórakozni járni?

I probably committed mistakes here and there so I'd appreciate some feedback. :)

Oddly enough "Quanta gente nesta cidade" would sound alright in Portuguese. :)

I guess it's just when you refer to the population as a whole and specially in the question: "How many people live here?", but you can perfectly say: "Tem muita gente aqui" (There's too many people here) or astonished "Quanta gente!" (How many people!), as a rule I'd say "gente" suits better for most situations and sounds more natural, but watch out for the exceptions :)

Indeed, I meant that "cuanta gente vive en esta ciudad?" would be correct Spanish. For all the other examples you mention Spanish would be identical to Portuguese...

Talking of "gente", I have a question: in Portuguese, what would be the difference in meaning between "essa gente" e "esse pessoal"? Pessoal is more colloquial right?

Hi Lisa,
here is a postcard of my town. It is not very big, but it is nice. Please tell me more about your town. How many
people live in it? What is particularly nice about your town? Where do you go in the evenings?

John

Querida Lisa,
tu pueblo. ¿Cuánto gente vive allí? ¿Qué es especialmente bueno sobre tu pueblo? ¿Dónde vas por las tardes?

Un abrazo,
Juan

Intermediate: (answer to having won a tour through the USA)
Thank you very much. I am so glad I won the prize. I would like to travel to the USA in July because of my job.
Will I be able to see my cousin Ann in Dallas? I know the tour only goes through Houston... Also I would really
like to go swimming in the ocean. I hope there will be time for that.
Yours sincerely,

Michelle Dubois

Muchas gracias.
Además me gustaría mucho a ir
nadando en el océano. Espero que lo habrá tiempo.

Atentamente,
Ginsberg

Does 'lo' in the very last sentence there make sense, in regarding to swimming in the ocean?

Great idea by the way Sprachprofi! Fantastic way to practice.

@Mikael84: I wouldn't say that "esse pessoal" is more colloquial, but it sounds much better than "essa gente", you should stick to that :)

No.

There's a few other things which don't sound right either.
