I would usually factor my personal life more into this, choosing languages which I think I would have many opportunities to practice in relation to people I know and where I live.
English (mother tongue)
French (first language I ever started to learn, and I'm doing a year of school in France right now)
Spanish (my bf is Colombian, my family lives in Florida... need I say more?)
German (my host family in France is actually Swiss/German/Dutch (i know), and I have quite a few other German friends)
Dutch (host family, plus easy to learn Dutch if you know English/German)
Portuguese (I visit S. America often)
Quechua (ditto, plus a chance to learn something non Indo-European)
Swedish (I have a good Swedish friend, also to get in touch with my roots)
Finally after that, 2 languages which I have no personal connection to whatsoever:
Thai (I love the culture, and I'd really like to immerse myself in an Asian culture at some point in my life)
Swahili (It's just always appealed to me...)
That was fun!

My top ten would look like this (if I didn't know Russian and Polish):
English,
Spanish,
French,
German,
Portuguese
+5 "fun" languages:
Greek,
Russian,
Polish,
Serbo-Croatian,
Hungarian.

As for the Asian languages, I would choose these:
Mandarin,
Japanese,
Hindi,
Farsi,
Turkish.
Sorry, guys, ten is too little. :) My ideal choice would be 15: 10 European + 5 Asian languages.

Oh, my Gosh! I totally forgot about Italian! Souls of great Dante and Petrarca, forgive me this unpardonable sin... That exquisite language will be without a doubt among the first five languages, however in that case I'd have to shift Portuguese to the "fun" section and I'll have to bid my farewell to Hungarian. :( ...unless the list would include 20 languages. :) In that case the four vacant positions will occupy Latin (mother of all Romance languages), Dutch, Swedish and Romanian.

Great Scott! I forgot to include Arabic in the Asian languages section. In that case I'll have to sacrifice one of the above-mentioned languages-unless... ;)

I'd tell the young lad to learn French, Spanish, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Arabic, and Korean. He'd be able to speak with somebody just about anywhere he went.
