If I could wake up one morning and be able to speak 10 languages like a native, the 10 would be -
Russian - Love the language and the country so much... Spanish - I find the language beautiful and energetic. I like travelling in Spain and Latin America too. French - Very useful, closest country to England, France is a nice place. German - Useful, Germany is close to England, I find the language kool and different to listen to, I would also love to travel around Germany. I prefer the sound of German over the more "feminine" sounds of French and Italian. Finnish - After Russian, this is my favourite language, I find it so unique and beautiful. Japanese - Incredible country to visit and I find Japanese to be the most pleasing Asian language to listen to. Chinese Mandarin - Again an incredible country to visit, over a billion speakers, becoming increasingly useful. Italian - Italy looks a stunning place to visit. Italian is also a useful language in Europe. Greek - I like Greece and I find the language beautiful and ancient with its own unique Mediterranian charm. Although it was a difficult decision to make as I don't like the language loads. Number 10 - I need to decide between Lithuanian (I love the sound), Georgian (Unique sound and writing system), Icelandic (Nice language and country).......and a few more lol Edited by Jon1991 on 13 April 2011 at 6:48pm 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Hmmm...if I could instantly speak 10 languages natively, with no regular maintenance then I would chose:
English - Duh. French - Gives me Africa and parts of Asia Spanish - Gives me most of South and Central America Brazilian Portuguese - Gives me the rest of South America Mandarin Chinese - My current love and necessary for East Asia Russian - Also useful in East Asia and gives me Eastern Europe Indonesian - Gives me much of Southeast Asia Cantonese - I LOVE Hong Kong! Japanese - I would only pick this language if I could speak it natively As for a tenth language, I have absolutely no clue. Maybe German to complete my knowledge of the major European languages, but between English, French and Russian it's not like I would have any problems getting around Europe. Maybe Turkish in order to gain Central Asia. Maybe Arabic for Northern Africa and the Middle East, but which dialect? Maybe another Chinese dialect but Mandarin is already pretty widespread in China. Maybe Korean to complete the CKJ trifecta but that would seem to be to be an empty accomplishment. So my guess is that the tenth language could be any of these or none. Besides it doesn't really matter anyways as being a native speaker in 9 diverse languages would give me lifetime of travel and employment options. This is always fun to think about. =D
It's hard for me to decide on 10, but I'm pretty sure I definitely want to know: 1. English (native) 2. Japanese 3. French 4. Spanish 5. Mandarin 6. Russian 7. Arabic After that, there are a few different ones I'm thinking about learning, including German, Portuguese, Thai, Korean, and Norwegian... I will try this:
1 English 2 Spanish 3 French 4 Portuguese 5 Russian These will give a good base to anybody in Europe, both Americas, Africa and pretty much around the world. After these it is a matter of somebody taste and attraction. Mine is: 6 Arabic 7 Finnish 8 Greek 9 German 10 Japanese. These are languages that I would like speak one day very well. But because of different taste and attraction I am going in this way: 1 Russian* 2 English 3 French ( because of Assimil - a rich choice of very good courses) 4 Greek 5a Hebrew ( Jeremiah 31:35-36) 5b Arabic ( great people, culture,history and very close to the above one) 6 Japanese (respect to the hardworking,smart people and also many many other reasons) 7 Finnish (as in Japanese description) 8 German (as in Japanese description) 9 Spanish 10 Portuguese Edited by VityaCo on 19 August 2011 at 8:54am 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I'd better finish those to the left before I take on the next ten or twenty. But the thing that really irritates me is that my Irish didn't get really far before I decided to put it on hold - it was a lovely language full of weird constructions and complicated rules (looking like a conlang invented by a disciple of Tolkien), but how do you learn a language from the writing when the writing has preciously little relation to the pronunciation? .. insofar anybody speaks that language at all?
So on a hypothetical extension to my language list Irish would reappear at the pole position. And after that some Asian languages and maybe a language or two from Africa, but that's more like building dream castles in the sky. Yes it would be nice to know Chinese and Japanese and Vietnamese and Thai and Bahasa Malaysia and Filipino and Hindi and Arabic and Swahili, but it also takes time to learn them. I've been going over this question for myself, and my personal list looks like this:
Know 1. Gujarati - Native Language 2. Hindi - National Language 3. English - Obvious reasons for learning, besides I lived in USA, and now live in UK Want to learn for sure 4. Spanish - one of the widely spoken languages. Useful. And also beautiful. 5. Italian - I absolutely love this language, country, and food 6. German - really like the country. Useful language to know in Europe for businesses. 7. Latin - No practical purpose, but I love Latin. Learning this would be a personal triumph for me. 8. Japanese - graceful language. Though not as practical as Chinese, I like the sound of Japanese better. Beautiful calligraphy. Maybe List - for Final 2 I am not sure which ones I definitely want to learn. 9. One Eastern European Language - possibly Russian 10. One Scandinavian Language My list is definitely European heavy, because I have stronger interest in Western world, and I'm particularly fond of Europe so it suits me more. I would recommend strongly to think about what interests you before you pick languages. 1 person has voted this message useful |
