Feels funny to say this but I sorta already have 10 if you do some shady accounting.
Polish, Norwegian, English, Italian, Dutch, French. Those are my "taking them seriously"
languages.
I can read and listen just fine to Swedish and Danish although I don't speak them and
don't feel any need to. And on the same basis there are a few others that are basically
within reach at this point. I haven't read any books yet in Afrikaans or Spanish but I've
read enough snippets to be confident enough I could handle a book. In a year or two when
my Dutch is stronger I can probably read German too.

This is such fun that I feel I may have done it before, but from where I stand now:
1. Mandarin (current love, daughter's homeland)
2. Korean (have opportunities to practice due to a nearby Korean community)
3. Portuguese (Portugal is an old favorite country, and Brazil could be a new adventure)
4. Spanish (gotta have it in the USA)
5. French (have studied but not mastered it; can read it; love the literature; Canada)
6. Hindi (find India fascinating, have felt kinship with the few Indians I've met)
7. German (family heritage, like Germany and Switzerland, relate to people and culture)
8. Russian (Tolstoy, Dostoevsky . . .)
9. Cantonese (might get a slight discount due to Mandarin, like southern China)
10. Japanese (just would like to travel in Japan)
But the truth is, I'd probably be very content with the first five.
