I've learned rudimentary Chinese through informal school and from being raised in a Taiwanese family; taken a semester of French in middle school; a semester of Japanese in high school. Now I'm using multimedia to help with picking up Chinese/French. I plan to learn more as needed. I haven't estimated how long each will take to learn. I don't perceive them as the most difficult languages - just something to learn for convenience and/or fun.

My choice for most important languages to learn:
1.English (......)
2.Spanish (a large range of traveling, ancient ruins, future market promising......)
3.French (interesting culture, and to a lesser extent a large range of traveling)
4.Mandarin (market promising, but that's already native!)
5.German (I think it's important in technology, philosophy, and laws)
6.Japanese (the second most popular language in Taiwan, with strong economical situation and fascinating modern and traditional culture)
7.Russian (its future seems promising......)
8.Portuguese (similar to Spanish, Brazil promising...)
9.xxx (can't think of any other)
10.xxx (can't think of any other)
Languages that I would want to learn because, well, just because:
1.Arabic (exotic and ancient)
2.Irish (it sounds fun......)
3.Greek (exotic and ancient)
4.Finnish (it's exciting to learn a language with such simple pronunciation but such complex grammar)
5.Taiwanese (that can be called my mother language)
6.Amis (one of the indigenous languages in Taiwan; it fascinates me)

For me.
1. English - Native tongue (that doesn't mean there isn't a great deal still
to learn)
2. French (The more i learn, the more i fall in love with it - i concentrate
most of my time here.)
3. Italian (Because it's so expressive, and easy.)
4. Spanish (Great traveling opportunities, easy)
5. Swedish (The Italian of the Germanic world, tonal, fun, a forward-
thinking society, easy for an english speaker, and it gives you access to
Danish and Norwegian for free, being mutually intelligible with Norwegian
and to a lesser extent danish ). That's almost 20 million people.
6. German - the most widely spoken language in Europe. Can be soft or
harsh sounding, quite beautiful.
7. Polish - Every time i hear a girl speak a slavic language my heart melts.
Such beautiful languages, though the difficulty puts me off.
8. Russian - More beautiful than polish, and a greater number of
speakers (unless the russian population keeps going the way it is).
9. Japanese - Always wanted to learn this one day.
10. Romanian - Even more beautiful than Italian? The most beautiful
language i've ever heard anyway.
Obviously i won't learn all of these, but in an ideal world, those are the 10
i would choose.

English- Pretty obvious why
French- Very interesting history and importance
Spanish-Extremely important for the future if you live in the U.S.
Mandarin- Could be very important with the way China is becomming more important
Latin- If you learn Latin every romance language after it is so much easier
Arabic- Come on important for today
German- Important economically and interesting Backround
Greek-This is just personal, I love it's culture and especially it's history
Russian-Difficult but yet satisfying language to learn and yes I also love it's history
And the last one could be up to them

The original question was:
Mr. Speaker wrote:
If you were to befriend a young ambitious person who claimed he/she wanted to become a decaglot, but couldn't decided on which ten languages to learn, which ten would you recommend? |

So, to answer that question:
1. English
2. Spanish
3. Mandarin
4. Japanese
5. French
6. Arabic
7. German
8. Korean
9. Hindi
10. Russian
...whereas the languages I'd like to learn are (in order):
1. Arabic
2. Catalan
3. German
3. Russian
4. Italian
6. Portuguese
7. Swedish
8. Dutch
9. Greek
10. Latin
11. Ancient Greek
12. Japanese
13. Mandarin
English and Spanish I've got for "free", so that makes a total of 15. It's definitely possible...at least, that's what I tell myself!

Well it all depends on where this young ambitious person is from. For the sake of my argument i´m going to say that they (like me) are from Australia as this influences the languages I would recommend.
English
Indonesian
Japanese
Mandarin
Spanish
French
German
Arabic
Russian
Hindi
Not necessarily in that order, but these 10 languages I would certainly consider the most imporant, covering a fair chunk of the globe.
English, Indonesian, Japanese are the most important languages within Australasia for business and economy.
Mandarin is becoming increasingly important worldwide as the chinese economy grows.
Spanish, French and German will cover you pretty well for travel or business within Europe, or will atleast give you an excellent grounding to move on to other European languages. Spanish and French will also help you out in South America, Africa, Pacific Islands and Canada. All beautiful languages with a great wealth of culture to accompany them.
Arabic opens the door the middle east and northern africa. This language is very important for political and also historical reasons. Knowing arabic whilst travelling through the middle east will open so many more doors and you will learn so much more about middle eastern life.
Russian will become more important in the future with a growing economy. Besides that it has an amazing ´mysterious´factor and opens the door to some amazing culture.
Last of all Hindi covers many more of the western asian countries leaving you with a fairly good coverage of the world. Hindi will give you a greater insight into some amazing spiritual and cultural worlds.
