It seems to me that it was just yesterday I posted here my goals for 2007 and now I have to renew my goals for 2008!!!
German
I started improving my German. Now I learn it actively and want to go on doing so. My goal is to reach a good level of reading comprehension and basic fluency when speaking it.
Tsotsil
I want to improve my reading comprehension as well.
Nahuatl
I want to review my Grammar and Vocabulary. I don't want to forget. Maybe I'll look for some exercises book as well.
Mandarin
I'll go on learning basic glyphs, phrases and structures.
English, French, Portuguese, Italian and Latin
I'll keep on practicing on internet (i.e. Wikipedia, How To Learn Any Language Forum, etc.)

Tsotsil? It is a Mayan language, isn't it?

I set my goals up by parts of the year rather than the whole thing. So I want to learn 1,000 new words by the end of February, 1,500 more by my birthday in July, and 2,000 more by the end of December. If I just set a broad goal for the year, I might procrastinate.

English
Start shadowing the exercises that we have at our phonetics classes and perhaps some podcast. I'd like to have a native-like accent, no clue what for if I'm not going to be a spy...
Finnish
Continue moving along to advanced fluency. I've asked a friend who's going to Finland for Christmas holidays to buy Lord Of The Rings in Finnish for me. It will be the first time I'll be reading such a huge book in a foreign language:))))
Also going to check some advanced-level textbooks at the library.
Latin
Try to reach basic fluency. Not sure what it means for dead languages...
Esperanto
Also striving for basic fluency. Learning more suffices and some more vocabulary should help. I also need to start using it more often.
German
Classses at university starting from September. Nothing special before that.
Belarusian
Reach at least the intermediate level, read and listen to genuine stuff as much as possible.
Portuguese
Start learning it as soon as I feel my knowledge of other languages is good enough to start a new one. Hopefully getting to intermediate by the end of the year.
General: start practising "immersion days" for languages other than Finnish.
If I achieve these goals I'll have basic fluency in three languages and intermediate level in two more (+ German) by the end of the year. Nice :) |

Since I was praised by our very strict Latin professor at the credit, I now think it's not too ambitious a goal to try to get an excellent mark for the Latin exam in June. They say this prof almost always gives satisfactory or bad marks at exams, but occasionally also good ones and rarely excellent marks.
Another new goal is start going through the tips at http://www.getitwriteonline.com, a site for those who want to improve their writing style in English. I've just found this site and I think it's fantastic. I'll try to go through one article each week during the semesters at uni and two-three articles during the weeks when I'm free from studies and have internet access. I'll also do some revision, perhaps once a month. So if everything goes as planned I'll have gone through 48-50 articles by the end of the year, but since things never work the way you expect them to, my plan is to go through 45 articles.

FRENCH
I plan to study for at least an hour a day, watch my DVD's in French and listen to French music. I hope to spend a few months working in France in early 2009, so I have deadline to meet!
German
No plans as yet, but hope to study in Germany in a few years time.
JAPANESE
Will try to learn at least one new Japanese word or phrase each week.
NORWEGIAN
I am trying to learn 10 new words or phrases a week. Am planning a trip to Norway later in the year so I hope to be able to order food, buy a ticket and ask for directions.

Well, I'm only really studying Korean, but I'm pretty seriously and committedly studying it full-time here in Korea. I take it 20 hours a week at school, and usually supplement the group classes with self-study for about 3-4 hours a day.
(Background on my current level: pretty basic, but I CAN have conversations in Korean for hours provided people are patient. I can watch Korean dramas/movies with about 50% comprehension. I can't yet read novels or the newspaper.)
My goals are:
1) Never slack off on Korean after school like I so often do, and actually study it for at least 40 hours a week, and use it in my free time to chat, watch movies, talk to my friends for another 20.
2) Learn at least 6,000 new words by the end of 2008.
3) Be able to read contemporary novels without a dictionary!!
4) Speak Korean fluently enough by the end of 2008 to be able to have deep conversations and discussions (provided the other person is patient).
Very ambitious, but I've come to Korea with the sole purpose of learning the language, and I have nothing else to do. I better work hard so I can move on to Japanese by next year.
