I haven't read all the replies to this thread but in my opinion if anyone is interested in learning any language should do that not due to professional reasons or even friend's suggestions....
It's within you the will to go for it!!!

Even though I can't give you the reasons as to why you should learn my native language, I can give you a website I made to teach you the language.
Learn Romanian Today
Also offering translations and new lessons coming soon.

Why learn Romanian? Let's see...
- An isolated Romance language usually overlooked by people. Could be reason enough.
- You want to do business in/move to Romania. Makes sense.
- You believe knowledge of Romanian is one of the keys to create world class gymnasts. Dubious though.
- You worship the memory of Nicolae Ceausescu. Whatever...
- You plan on raising awareness to the cause of orphans. You believe reenacting one of those notorious Romanian orphanages, with chained children and genuine Romanian spoken, will do the trick. Ugh.

Hello!
I'm Elisabeta from Romania. I teach English in Romania and also Romanian (as a foreign language). Unfortunately I believe that thare are very few online materials for learning Romanian, but I can recommend you a forum on the site of the Letters University in Cluj Napoca Romania. - www.lett.ubbcluj.ro - there is a subforum for this particular Department.
Our Department offers courses of Romanian as a foreign language to different categories of students: the ones studying the language year, the ones studying in UBB as part of inter-university contracts (ERASMUS, CEEPUS, double diploma) or the ones benefitting of different scholarships. We also teach Romanian for the students participating in the EILC programme and the summer courses. Actually, anyone can ask for courses in our Department, having the possibility to study as part of our groups of students, in smaller groups or one to one. Unlike our students, these people will have to pay for the classes, but usually a convenient arrangement is available for all those interested.
If you need materials, if you have questions, do not hesitate to write on the forum. Romanians are really eager to have their language known in the world.
YES - LEARNING ROMANIAN IS WORTH YOUR WHILE!

Isn't there quite a large area of Romanian speakers outside of Romania, e.g. misc. parts of the ex USSR - Moldova, Russia, Ukraine or somewhere in those parts of the world?
I read that the language of Moldova is essentially Romanian, and that Moldovans did not live only in Moldova, but moved to other neighbouring areas. No idea what numbers are involved though. Maybe a few hundred thousand people, perhaps more? Anyway, I think you'd be able to add Moldovans to the list of people you can communicate with if you learn Romanian (??)
