I *have* been reading some. I'm at page 48 I think.
Only… time just became so much scarcer. Loving the book now, the story has got going and it's catches me just like it did so many years ago, only in Russian this time around! I have made a conscient effort to decrese the amount of words I underline and look up, and for the last pages I have succeeded. Two of the very few words that I added to Anki, and that were perhaps theeeee most useless ones but I just couldn't resist them, "она заблудилась на зарослах вереска" (she got lost in the thicket of heather) and "небрежение" (neglect, specifially marked as "literary" in the dictionary) actually appeared again in the book shortly after I had memorized them! :D 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

As a fervent reader I must answer here... My approach is somewhat different. I'm now at an intermediate level with Danish and read fiction without using a dictionary. First I bought a series (12 books) of crime novels of one Danish author. The first four books I also bought in German. I started reading one paragraph in German an then one paragraph in Danish. But the single parts got soon bigger - first chapterwise and from the third or fourth book on I read in Danish only. With great pleasure I finnished the whole series, not using neither the German version nor a dictionary. And my reading speed in Danish increased enormously. Of course, I am not able to translate from Danish to German, but I can follow, understand and savour Danish fiction - I've read also other books. Now and then I take some paragraphs out of the books I've read and work with them. While reading I want to know the story in the first place, the language is "only" the aid. Russian is also on my wishlist and when the time comes, I'll read the complete series of Alexandra Marinina :-) Wish you all the best for your Russian through literature!! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Thank you, glossa.passion, for your input! That is kind of what I did with French five years ago and I think I worried less about unknown words back then.
--- Well, you had to my French classes occupying my whole life lately I haven't been able to read that much in Wuthering Heights. I have however read until page 67 and I have started reading War and Peace by Tolstoy for my French essay on the French language in Russia during the 18th and 19th centuries. So far I have read 60 pages out of 886 in a Word document and I really like it. I bought Anna Karenina off of eBay as well and I am very much looking forward to reading it. I will most likely not read the whole books for my essay, only enough to find what I need, but I will read them eventually. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I decided to do some reading today! I even got to page 80, so I'm quite pleased. I read some without looking anything up, some while scanning words as I go along with my new C-Pen, and then looking them up in bulks of 8 perhaps in a traditional online translator (the C-Pen dictionary system actually sucks biiiig time, but fortunately it scans well).
I really want to continue with Tolstoy as well. The inbuilt dictionary and translator in Word 2007 makes everything soooo easy. "Кто не сделал к десяти утра половины своей дневной работы, тот рискует не управиться со второй половиной." -- I so agree! I continued with War & Peace, and I'm now at page 49/479 (no of pages depends on what view I use, but I will refer to this one in the future). Some scenes really confuse me and I wish I could get a clear overview of all the characters. I'm still liking it though!

I haven't been doing very much reading lately, but I have managed to read Karamzin's Моя исповедь (12 Word pages). I really liked it, it's like a whole sentimental novel with a mean twist summed up in a short story (only the hero is a true bastard).
Some favourite quotes: Великое слово "так" было всегда моим девизом. Ныне люди путешествуют не для того, чтобы узнать и верно описать другие земли, но чтобы иметь случай поговорить о себе. Еще и другим отличусь от моих собратий - авторов, а именно краткостию. Они умеют расплодить самое ничто; я самые важные случаи жизни своей опишу на листочке. -- Come to think of it, I have been reading some pages (perhaps 10-15) of a commentary on Евгений Онегин, and three petty pages of the book itself. I've tried to listen to an audiobook as well, Князь Миро Сего (Сегу?), something like that. It's very weird and what is up with Russian audiobooks? First sentence ("она заблудилась на зарослах вереска") seems strange: in such cases we use the preposition "в", but "на". The word "небрежение" really is Church Slavonic, not Russian. In modern Russia it uses very seldom.
