Normally it is advised to only learn ONE language at a time since it will probably take you longer to become proficient in either. There is a thread on this "wanderlust" which you'd benefit from reading.

Brianna, this is an exciting idea that many people such as Brother Salvatore have had in the past.

In my humble opinion if you want to actually finish these languages you'll be much, much better off to focus on one. If all you want is flirt with the languages with no intention of ever being fluent, you can 'learn' of of the Romance languages at the same time. There is nothing wrong with doing that but you need to be clear about the objective before you start.

I think it is not a good idea the learning of 2 o more languages of the same family at the same time. Maybe you will talk a phrase in French with Spanish words or Italian.

Thanks for the advice! I've read the thread on wanderlust, and I've been trying to work on subduing that curiosity. I guess I knew all along that it's best to study one at a time, but wanted to cling on to false hope. :)

That page about Brother Salvatore was very funny, but the MP3 clip might give me nightmares.

I speak four Romance languages. They are: Portuguese - my mother tongue -, Spanish, Italian and French, which I am currently teaching myself.

At the same period of time I was teaching myself Italian, I was also having Spanish classes at school. Then, after finishing the Italian course, I began to learn French on my own. But that was just my preference. I did not wait until the end of the Italian course to do so because of the fact that I was dealing with Romance language, but because it was my personal will. That brought me absolutely no problems. If you study them correctly and reach a solid knowledge of each one, then you should not make confusions between them. However, it is always good to pay attention when you are in touch with a Romance language, in order not to make silly mistakes, by influence from others from the same family.

In a nutshell, Tuffy, I have never had problems with them and I can assure you learning more than one Romance language will not ruin the other ones.

Ok thanks. At the moment I'm focusing 100% on Spanish and I even avoid French. But sometimes when I do hear some French I get the feeling I understand that better than before too! So indeed, knowing 1 Roman language is a ticket to learning another one faster. And instead of competing with each other they probably support each other. Making it easier to remember and learn new words because they are simular to words you already know.

[QUOTE=patuco] I would recommend learning French after Spanish for exactly the reasons you mentioned above, i.e. another Romance language so constructions would be similar as would certain vocabulary.
QUOTE]

However, Barry Farber says that it's better to learn a language with nothing in common with your last language studied. Probably because you could ignore some things saying "Oh I already know it" when tere are instead some differences, I don't know.
