BATTLE PLAN FOR SAT/SUN
Sat: Memorize vocab for chapters 15, 16, 17 Review all other vocab in the textbook Make list of grammar points Start undone busywork (6 things) Start memorizing at least two chapter dialogues (9!!!) Sun: Review all vocab Review list of all grammar points Finish undone busywork Finish memorizing at least two chapter dialogues Since I have 9 chapters to memorize, I should do 2 Mon, 2 Tues, 2 Weds, 2 Thurs, 1 Fri in a worst case scenario. If I have time, I also need to finish making my flashcards, of which I have a tonne... Also: YAY my book came!! It is very, very thin, but that's okay, because that just means I'll actually be able to finish it. Wink wink nudge nudge. Keep it up. The reading of Arabic becomes a lot easier over time and exposure. Give it a few months and the roots of the words along with context will have you reading faster. It also makes memorization easier.

Dear anyone who has responded to one of my private messages: I'll get back to you soon
:) Done today: - put about 100 flashcards into Anki (ch 15-17 and a few supplementary) - read half a paragraph of my book... very slow going, but I'm not sweating it. I'm only around 90% sure that I comprehended it anywhere near what it was supposed to be, though, as a piece of grammar confused me a little. - put maybe ten vocab words from aforementioned reading onto my blog. - wrote four postcards. Still need to do: - review all flashcards - memorize 2 chapters - write a few paragraphs - finish all undone busywork Not really a studying day, more a reviewing day. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Done today thus far:
- reviewed flashcards 15-17; I have about 20 I don't know yet... - read a page of my easy Chinese reading to relax. Unfortunately, not very relaxed as I hate this book. Well, as I may or may not have mentioned, I have just realized that I purchased the
wrong book. I thought I had an English translation, but instead what I have a translation of is The Search. So, I mean, that's okay. But I sort of wanted to read alongside a translation, at least at first. It's not that big a deal as I'm mostly just using the text to mine for vocabulary more than anything else, but it's still mildly frustrating. I also decided to print out the graded readers I have today, which worked out well until I ran out of ink. And now my 'i' key has just fallen off. Nothing to report today. So some time ago I bought several beautiful, hardcover Chinese translations of various
French and English works. I bought these because for the most part it is much easier for me to read translations in Chinese and I wanted to take a break from "hard" reading and solidify my grasp on more basic vocabulary - I don't know if translations really are easier or if it's just a psychological thing for me, but, Ulysses aside, this has been my experience. Anyway, one of the books I bought was Duras' Moderato Cantabile. I've been reading this book for the last month. No more. I am sick and tired of this book. I don't know if it's just a terrible translation or if it's just a terrible book. It's certainly not at all difficult. But the language, the length of the sentences, the awful dialogue, the horrible plot - no, it's just too much for me. I quit! Whew, that rant felt good, but what feels even better is the knowledge that I won't open that particular edition again, at least not for a long, tranquil while. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

First of all let me congratulate you for your good progress.
From what I understood, you are able to read Arabic to some degree, is that right? I also noticed you started studying Arabic in June 2009. I always thought learning how to read Arabic (or any other non romanized language) would be a rather long term achievement. Therefore I am curious about your Arabic studies. Did you have any background in the language before you started this June? If not, how many hours did you spend per day until you've become, let's say, literate? Also, you talk about homework.
