I bought them both on eBay. The only company name on them is
Multilingua, In. .The tapes say US Department of State and have the FSI
seal. I know what Barron's look like (I have Spanish) and these are
definitely not Barron's. Nowhere on it does it say "Audio Forum". I have
another product from Audio Forum and their binders usually have their
name in big letters on it.
Pentantonic, the recording computer is dedicated to just that. I do other
work on a different system. Although I didn't listen to all of the mp3s, I
did examine the waveforms both while recording and afterwards to check
levels, remove the hiss, and set markers for mp3 labels. Because all of the
tapes have hiss at about -48db, it would be pretty easy to see gaps
because they would show up as silence (-?).
Oh, and cut the spine off a library book...? c'mon!
If it had been a library book I would have done it on my flatbed.
You can see what the tapes look like HERE

Nice work mtwalker. I bought FSI Japanese 1 used and the tapes look exactly the same as yours. They came in two puffy "Multilingua Inc." folders. It would be great if you could upload your conversions to my FTP.

Those Multilingua courses seem be selling a lot on eBay and I almost bought one myself. I noticed then from inspecting the photos that Multilingua was a company in NY but I couldn't find a website. Francois has said repeatedly that only courses directly from the FSI will be distributed from this site and Multilingua doesn't appear to be the FSI so ...

Sorry, but you didn't seem to know where they came from so I thought you borrowed them from somewhere. Glad to hear you're a good library citizen ;)

Yes, my German set was in the puffy binder also but I only have 1 binder
of 12 tapes. Italian is 12 tape also. Anyway, I'll be happy to send them to
you. Italian is about 380mb. Although, if I convert the mp3s to mono it
would cut that in half. What are you (and/or other people) using stereo or
mono?

As far as Multilingua, it appears that they are the manufacturer/
distributor. There is no copyright statement or symbol anywhere on the
materials (unlike Audio Forum and LinguaPhone where it is quite
prominent).

I save my files in the voice setting of the mp3Pro codec (32kbps/22khz). The files are mono and tiny and sound good. Note: most other mp3 codecs sound horrible at this rate.
Your post prompted me to look around at work and we also have one of those scanners to pdf fax/printer/emailer machines. It emails the pdf to you. Thanks, if the PDF is good enough quality it will save me a lot of work.

There seem to be a 'Multilingua Inc.' (here). Are you sure these people are not like Audioforum and that the tapes are straight from Uncle Sam? Is there any US lawyer on the forum who could check if such a company does exist?
