If anyone would digitize FSI Serbo-Croatian or something like it I would be forever thankful...

Once the intial digitizing was

Do you seen any major problem digitizing in mono instead of stereo? I'm been using Audacity, but when I try to digitize in stereo it doesn't quite sound right. The audio lags behind itself a little bit.

Plus 96k in stereo sounds poor. If you keep stereo you have to be at least 128k, otherwise just go with mono. It doubles the quality because there's only one audio track.

I could use some help. I'm trying to digitize units 13-21 of FSI French with Audacity, but I'm having trouble with the noise removal.

After I copy a tape over to my computer it sounds pretty good, besides the hissing. When I use the noise removal option the hissing is completely removed, but there is still some strange background noise. I've tried different noise removal settings, but most of them severely distort the audio. I have also tried recording the file at 96, 128, and 192 kbps. All of these have the same problem.

Here is a sample that shows the problem I'm having.

I would appreciate any help.

Also, I thought it might be a good idea to list the FSI courses that have been or are being digitized. This way people don't work hard on something that has already been done. So, unless someone else is already working on it, I plan on doing FSI French units 13-21.

The background "noise" is the result of the noise reduction technique. I've used Sony's Noise Reduction plugin and it has different "modes" of operation. Perhaps Audacity can change this?

Here's a sample of some different settings I've used. This file has first the original audio, then I used a setting that takes out most of the noise without destroying the audio, and the last mode sounds a lot like the one you used.

Thank you for the info Sir Nigel. Where can one download this plugin? Or is it something I have to buy?
