Aww Philip I'm sorry...
I guess you just have to do whatever you feel will work for you. If you have to take a break and cool off and think then I guess that's just what you have to do. Maybe you could just take a break from BYKI but keep going with other stuff while you decide what to do? Or maybe you could keep putting new lists in and think about what to do about the lost ones? Could you only redo the lists that you need work on and not the ones you already know well? First of all - gosh that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that you lost all that.
Second - get someone who knows about computers to see if the files can be salvaged, they could be archived in a place that wouldn't be overridden by the new install. Third and most importantly, you obviously put a lot of work into your BYKI but it is only a tiny fragment of what matters for your language skills. You're awesome at this, and if you didn't know that already then it's about time someone told you. And you obviously love learning languages, so don't let this take that away. I know it's hugely upsetting to lose huge amounts of work because of computer errors - I think we've all been there - but perhaps you can choose to take this as a sign that you should be focusing solely on the ways of learning that are more fun than BYKIing. You know I had to say that :-) You'll be ok - and I look forward to seeing you back, logging enthusiastically, hopefully very soon. Lastly, your minor episode of carelessness is no match for mine - I deleted Windows .dll files in my early teens... Thanks for the encouragement. My aunt is a computer recovery specialist and she is sending some software (should be here on Tuesday) that should be able to fix the problem. If not, oh well.
I do, however, want to keep my lists of BYKI. They are good records of what I have learned and make reviewing easy when I want. I won't leave languages, I was just having a huge mental breakdown at the moment. I think I might take a week off though, if only to catch up on other stuff. After going and studying some horrid biology and language arts, I was refreshed and realized how much I liked languages still. So much more fun and interesting than oxidative phosphorylation and the like. In the meantime, I'm not supposed to use this computer, according to my aunt, so I should turn it off now. Damn, I hate computers sometimes. That sucks.
One thing I try to remember, though, is that life goes on with or without computers, and sometimes I have to try a bit harder to be more detached from whatever happens on my computer. I'd never actually heard of bkyi before you mentioned it. I mostly measure my progress based on how much of my novels I'm able to understand and enjoy, and all those novels would still be around if my computer suddenly exploded. The extent of my computer usage for languages is using Anki, which makes automatic backups of my flashcards all the time, so I don't worry too much. anyway, I hope you get things sorted out successfully, and I look forward to seeing more of your interesting journal entries. You've inspired me to look for some books about Swedish, although I've decided i should only get books *in German* about Swedish, so that i can practice German while i learn Swedish. Well, I have not really done any languages so far this week as promised, but I wanted to update some stuff before I forget.
On Sunday my grandparents returned from Greece (after five months, they spend June-October there) and this means that I will begin my weekly Greek "lessons" on Fridays with my grandmother. Whether or not we will actually be learning anything, I do not know. We tend to just end up hanging out, talking, arguing, watching TV, and eating ice cream and lavish dinners. But it's fun anyways and a nice way to end the school week. Another consequence of them coming back is that they brought me souvenir from their recent trip to Istanbul (excuse me, Yiayia, Constantinople): a Turkish coursebook. It looks like it mostly goes through the grammar and adding vocabulary here and there, but mostly a grammar. And it has a CD. But anyways, if I start studying Turkish at some point (way in the distant future), I shall have materials. :) About my lost vocabulary lists, well, my aunt didn't manage to send the CD yesterday, so it should arrive tomorrow. I will update about that when news becomes available (hopefully positive news). :) Finally, I did do some language this week because of my language classes at school, about which I haven't written in a long time. Last week in French we got a new textbook (we have THREE now): Imaginez. Apparently we are now going to start learning things in that class, such as vocabulary and this is to be our source. We have already had to learn about 60 words from it already. The method: manual flashcards. Not having done those in so long, it seems so cumbersome and annoying compared to the quick and simple BYKI. Oh well. That's about it. Oh, I might end up doing some Swedish and/or German this week because I don't want to get behind and I am finding myself more and more infatuated with the Germanic languages. Truly a nice refresher from my LONG journey through the Romance languages (excepting Greek, before starting German about a year ago, the only foreign languages I had studied were Romance languages). --Philip 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

No. Absolutely not. Yet. In the next 5-10 years or so, probably, maybe. But not now. On a different topic, school is canceled today (tomorrow too, maybe) because we are getting a huge blizzard. Yay! I intend to finish catching up and getting ahead on my homework and school reading. This means that I will (hopefully) not have as much to do next week, so I can work on languages again. Guess what, everybody!? I recovered all of my vocabulary lists, even ones that I intentionally deleted long ago! I found it without the help of the CD my aunt sent too. A round of applause for the tech support people at Transparent Language! They told me exactly where to look (in some weird hidden file that wouldn't show up unless you specifically search for it).
