In regards to language centers in Berlin...can you recommend the best programs in Berlin for studying German?
Which of the three is the best for one-one lessons?
IH Prolog
GLS
Goethe Institute
IH Prolog and GLS are about the same in price. I can't say for Goethe Institute.

I was wondering the same thing! I searched for any events like this in New York City, thinking maybe that would be an ideal city for a language-learning exposition--with the very attractive benefit of being, for me, very easy to get to! I live within view of the city and public transportation has been much improved since that terrible day in 2001. But, alas, no luck with the search. There are a lot of individual language schools, but I did not see any language product trade fairs. If anyone knows of one, in the New York area or elsewhere, please post the information!
Now if I had the money to get to Berlin for this, I'd do it--yes, I'd spend a lot of money to travel far away, just to get free stuff! Sadly, it's not possible now.
Raiding Berlin's best book store? Oh, what a dream! I got to spend a while in Leipzig last year, wonderful place, and was hoping to get to Berlin, but there was not enough time. One day I will do it!

I do not know which is the best, as I haven't had the chance to try them. I know that an Australian friend of mine was taking small-group language classes in Berlin, but I believe he only tried the Goethe Institut and was very disappointed with how grammar-based the instruction was, giving little opportunity to use the language. I asked him about the other institutes now.
EDIT: He tried the DeutschAkademie in Berlin, which was similarly bad.
If you're looking for 1-on-1 instruction anyway, I would suggest going with an unaffiliated private teacher, as these institutes add too much of a surcharge. You could do a test session online to determine which teacher is good for you, and you may be able to arrange a homestay with your teacher. I'm dying to try that kind of program - staying or traveling with your teacher, learning while you see the sights and being surrounded by the local culture to boot.
As for similar fairs I know of one in Paris and one in Prague, but none in the USA. There is also something called a Linguafest', similar but less commercial and presenting more mini-courses in considerably more (and more exotic) languages. The concept was invented by American Esperanto speaker Dennis Keefe, who organizes these festivals wherever he lives: first in Tours, France, then in Cheboksary, Russia, (those two still take place every year), then in Urbana, Illinois in 1999, then Nanjing, China... afaik he still lives in Asia, so won't be back to try and restart this movement in America. Oh, those Esperanto speakers...

Sigh.. I can't make it at all. Berlin is way too far away from where I am, and I actually have interviews and exams in November. :(
Oh well, at least I have meetings with forum members in Korea... That's comforting...

Wow, sounds like fun. I can't make it this year, but I'm hoping to spend the second half of 2010 in Berlin so I'll be sure to go then. If I do end up going to Berlin next year, I'll be sure to send you a message, Sprachprofi, and we can do some nerdy language things together perhaps.
