I am encouraged by your results and your friend's experience in Brazil. It's also interesting that your method helped you avoid confusing similar languages. I will definitely be using the same principles with my next language. With French, when I finally focused more on listening, it helped tremendously with my comprehension and pronunciation. I had tried shadowing (prematurely, I now think), used all 3 levels of Pimsleur, and a programme dedicated to French pronunciation, yet I got better results from just exposing my ears to authentic speech.

I wish I had known about these principles (the Natural Approach, the Birkenbihl method, etc.) years ago. Oh well, better late than never.

This is one of the more interesting threads I read this past summer. Has anyone else tried lots of listening before speaking, with results?

Well, we all learn our native language this way. I learned my languages, and continue to improve them, by getting as much comprehensible input as possible, whether by listening or reading.

Yes, but it usually takes children a lot longer to achieve what an adult can in the same timeframe.

A five-year-old child will have the vocabulary and sentence structure of a five-year-old (regardless of how good his/her accent is) whilst a diligent and motivated adult learner should have a vastly improved vocabulary and firmer grasp of grammar mainly because the adult doesn't have to limit him/herself to listening only.

A five-year-old child has essentially mastered the grammar of his/her language and has a vocabulary of several thousand words with native mastery. Adult language learners vary widely in the level achieved - many never attain native-like mastery of the grammar or vocabulary. Successful language learners have had large amounts of comprehensible input. Comprehensible input includes not only listening, but reading as well.
