Finished Pimsleur 28 today!
Jimbo--what's happening with Cantonese? Are you jumping ship on Asian languages now that you're in the
Western Hemisphere? I have always liked Portuguese, ever since a romantic trip there in my 20s . . .

Congratulations on working your way through Pimsleur.
RE: My Cantonese studies
I'll get back to the program before too long. Been focused on getting settled in and trying to brush up on my
French. My old Cantonese speaking friends have moved out to the suburbs so I don't hear a lot of Cantonese in
my day to day life. There certainly are a lot more Mandarin speakers in town than their used to be.
RE: Portuguese
Portuguese would make a lot of sense for me right now since I live at the edge of a huge Portuguese
neighbourhood. Really want to work on French, Cantonese, and Italian first though.

It's been awhile since I have posted. The good news is, I FINISHED PIMSLEUR!!! Sorry, but that deserves a shout.
All 90 lessons, most twice through. I may write more later on about my evaluation of Pimsleur Mandarin, but the
quick version is that I think it's been worthwhile. It has helped my pronunciation and speaking ability a lot, and I
have done it while performing other tasks. I have forgotten some of the phrases and vocabulary, but just
reviewing a few of the dialogues brings it back, so that is what I plan to do in spare moments before our China
trip.
The bad news is, more rocky times at home. The Midlife Mom may become the Single Midlife Mom, and the
emotional turmoil wreaks havoc with language studies.
So, I have devised the "trauma" language study program, and here it is:
-listen to anything Chinese while driving and walking around (good distraction from racing thoughts)
-watch an episode of Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf each day (so silly it's impossible to be sad while watching)
-do SRS as possible
-read Chinese in bed. The harder, the more sleep-inducing, which is a good thing.

I hope eveything works out for you. I can't imagine how crazy your life must feel right now.
On language learning matters...congrats on finishing Pimsleur! A very nice feather to have in your cap.

Congratulations on finishing Pimsleur!
Have you been able to find anything to practice reading? Children's books are a good place to start.
Chinese subtitles on your favourite TV shows work well too but the region code on DVDs may make that difficult to
get.

I was thinking more along the lines of your local video shop won't be selling your favourite TV series with
Chinese subtitles. I guess you can find anything you want on the Internet anyways so not a huge issue perhaps.
It must have been all the long bus rides I was stuck on in Taiwan back in the day.... I got used to watching
movies in English with Chinese subtitles. The audio was turned down so low I could barely hear the dialogs and
wound up reading the subtitles in Chinese. Too strange but it is either that or stare at everyone else stuck in
traffic.
