Watch more Chinese TV with Chinese subtitles. You'd be amazed at how much your character recognition improves.
Good for listening comprehension too.

I would second aerozeplyn's suggestion. I have been studying on my own for about 5 months now and have a 1 hour study session with a tutor on Skype once per week. She lives in Beijing and uses almost no English with me and I feel like I am progressing very rapidly. During our last session last Wednesday there was only 2-3 minutes of English in the 1 hour session and I was extremely proud to think I understood about 90% of everything that she said and that she understood about 70% of everything I said the first time around.
It's a bit intimidating at first, but sometimes you just have to jump in the deep end and keep kicking.
I love reading your updates and look forward to seeing more. Best of luck.

Thank you for all the encouragement! Aero, it's good to know that there are others blundering along with
occasional low scores, and yes, I'm sure my score would've been even lower earlier in my studies. Jimbo:
you're right, I do need to watch more Chinese TV, and that's something I might be able to do even when
I'm too brain-dead to do anything else.
Jondesousa, wow, five months in and you're having successful conversations--that's impressive! Where did
you find your skype tutor?

Hi Li Fei,
I found my skype tutor on edufire.com. I was originally going to sign up for her class on there (her name is Sunny Dang) but she recommended separate skype study since I was the only student. It's 15USD for a 1 hour class so I meet with her for 1 hour a week. She is very skilled and has great English for the start of the tutoring, but tries to minimize it quickly. She works out of several texts and lets the student select the one they are most comfortable with. I work through NPCR (currently at lesson 20 in book 2) and we review during class and have conversation.
I'd highly recommend her if you have the time. I can send you her e-mail by PM if you like.
Best wishes,
Jon

Finally finished my semester from hell, a hell that included Chinese 205. I really botched the course, but
learned a fair amount. Right now I am burned out. Not sure if I am burned out on Chinese, or just on a
class taught at the wrong pace for me.
